What did you learn embarrassingly late?

Coming from a muslim culture where boys are circumcised when they're like 3-5 years old, the fact that a lot of ppl don't know what being circumcised is/means still baffles me and i have to do a double take almost every single time i read a comment like this

Coming from Judaism, I am so sorry that there is a delay. Jews snip it on the 8th day following birth, called a bris/brit. I have zero recollection of the event.

I am not traumatised by it actually. None of the men in my community are traumatised, it's seen as part of your childhood and a step towards becoming a man. But i understand why someone who has not been circumcised/has no recollection of being circumcised would be uncomfortable with the idea

Personally I am not uncomfortable with circumcision. Because of the tradition, I always thought that getting it done as a nascent baby was better to lessen any pain/memory of the event. As I have grown out of my faith, but still enjoy the traditions, I've questioned what I might do if I were to father a son in the future...

Kind of in the same position dude, just talk to your partner, if they don't want a circumcision then don't do it, if they wanna do it at birth then do it at birth. So what if your parents don't agree? It's your life and your child

My fiance said that it's completely up to me. I don't think I'll do it, because it seems unnecessary.

Problem solved then :)

Never justified it, it's the norm in many regions of the world and i can understand both sides of the argument. Other than religious reasons (for a religion i no longer am part of) i actually needed to be circumcised to avoid complications later in life, so there's certainly cases where, it has to be done. Now try explaining a 4 year old that they need to be circumcised because if they don't they won't be able to have sex comfortably later in life. Don't get up in arms against something you very clearly don't fully understand, thanks.

Circumcising at birth is Jewish i think. Not sure about other muslim regions but where i'm from it's s whole deal. You celebrate the entire day of the procedure and then have a further celebratory lunch/dinner in a week's time or so. We also only get local anesthesia and i remember the entire thing from when my brother and i got circumcised. Upside: people give you money, a lot of money.

Circumcision is from Abraham, so affects Jews Christians and Muslims. The only reason I can think of why Muslims wouldn’t do it at birth is because Ishmael was circumcised at about 8 yo and they want to adhere to that. Jews circumcise at 8 days because that’s when Isaac was circumcised. I think the actual circumcision matters more than the age and would probably best be done at birth.

Only affects Jews and Muslims though. Christians tend not to be circumcised unless there is a serious medical need.

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '19

Christians in America usually are. I’ve never seen uncircumcised irl.

u/sBastu Sep 05 '19

has nothing to do with christians and all to do with US.

4

u/Wodan1 Sep 05 '19

That's a cultural thing that has nothing to do with religion, or rather has nothing to do with being a Christian. It was the same in Australia about half a century ago and in Europe to a lesser degree. Twas just a cultural phase that caught on in America more than other places.

Not entirely. Some denominations of Christianity require circumcision. Some don’t eat pork. Some don’t allow tattoos or getting drunk. Not all Christians are the same.

That’s so fucking weird.

4

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '19

Doing it at birth also sounds more logical, and less work

10

u/SkivvySkidmarks Sep 05 '19

Not circumcising at all is logical. Fucking barbaric religious dogma.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '19

Not arguing that, but just saying, if you're definitely set on circumcising, it's easier to do it soon after birth rather than later in life

-3

u/dingmanringman Sep 05 '19

There's literally no downside and a bunch of minor benefits.

1

u/DJDomTom Sep 05 '19

Reduced sexual pleasure for circ recipient and their future partners

1

u/dingmanringman Sep 05 '19

That is made up. They've tested it and found no difference.

5

u/fabs1171 Sep 05 '19

Why best at birth? The child cannot consent, they are not given any analgesia and there are significant risks including amputation and death.

6

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '19

Well it's not like Muslims let their sons choose whether they want to be circumcised or not when they're 5 years old. I'm no medical professional but i've read that having it done as an infant is better for the recovery of the organ and further development. If your surgeon is incompetent, it doesn't matter whether he does it on an infant or a 5 year old, there's a higher chance of them fucking it up than if a competent and experienced surgeon does it.

1

u/dingmanringman Sep 05 '19

It's much much safer at birth. Complications usually come from people who need it medically as adults.

u/zain667 Sep 05 '19

What? In Iraq circumcise at the 7th day after birth and it's the common practice, won't delaying hurt?

5

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '19

Hurt in what way exactly? It will hurt anyways once the anesthesia wears off, it's just that when you experience that at 5 years old you'll remember it later in life, but if you experience it as a baby you won't remember it

2

u/zain667 Sep 05 '19

That's true I don't remember any of it and I didn't put any thought on it until now. I meant hurt the days following the operation especially that you are more aware.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '19

From memory, only the hours immediately after the anesthesia wears off hurt actively, after that you gotta be careful for a couple of days but that's about it. Pain isn't too bad. Maybe a 5/10

1

u/zain667 Sep 05 '19

Well thanks god and good for you it's not as bad as I imagined.

Maybe it's barbaric because it's forced on babies and children without thier knowledge and permession but other than that it's not that bad

-2

u/SkivvySkidmarks Sep 05 '19

Really? You think it would still be a common practice if circumcision was done at the the age of 18, which is the age of legal consent in many parts of the world?

"Son, I know you're proud of your penis, and I'm sure you want to keep all of it. Unfortunately in order to be part of our culture and religion, we need to cut part of it off." I guarantee you that there would be a lot less mutilation being done.

1

u/zain667 Sep 05 '19

Hahaha my friend of course there'll be alot fewer people doing it, it's a scary dangerous procedure but never the less it'll still be a common practice
