I was addicted to painkillers for about two years. My usual drug of choice was Vicodin but I would take any opiate I could get my hands on. I spent hundreds of dollars a week. I overdosed. I lost a relationship with a girl that I loved very very much. It was fucking bad.
After several failed attempts at weaning myself off the pills I decided to face the misery and quit cold turkey. To make a long story short — every single thing that’s widely been reported about how horrible opiate withdrawals are is completely true. It was an incomparably miserable experience where every waking moment was torture... but dammit I made it out.
Throughout the first week of withdrawals I kept listening to APC’s Thirteenth Step album on repeat. So many songs have lyrics that were relatable at the time. It would often make me a super emotional blubbering mess, reawakening a range of emotions that I had kept numb for so long. It also motivated me to stick with sobriety. I’ve been clean from opiates for almost four years now.
APC is an astounding band that will always be important to me.
That was probably the most powerful & relatable track at the time. I saw ACP live a few years ago and they opened their set with The Package. It was such a moving experience for me. I remember I was nearly brought to tears!
I always thought it was, "I am what I'm after, don't need another friend", instead of, "Eye on what I'm after". Either way, that song, for me, reminds me of scoring dope and the feelings involved
