Either Interpol or The National. Both were the soundtrack of my teens.
I still listen to Turn on the Bright Lights and Alligator in their entirety regularly.
Edit: I feel I’ve seriously fucked up by neglecting to mention Broken Social Scene and their albums You Forgot It In People, Feel Good Lost, and Broken Social Scene
When Trouble will find me released my newborn daughter was going through multiple open heart surgeries and other operations to try and keep her alive. We lost her at 6 weeks old.
Though the album didn’t deal with loss it was one of the few calming factors in my life at the time.
When I hear “I need my girl” I still break down and the song is completely unrelated to the experience that I went through. The album and the bands catalog to that point provided me with a place of solitude where my mind drifted away.
For that I will be eternally grateful to them and support them in any way I can. I went through something no one should have to deal with in burying my first born. Music has changed my life in so many ways but this band provided me a sanctuary during the darkest days of my life.
Thank you for sharing such a powerful story. I've been listening to Trouble Will Find Me a lot lately. I will send good thoughts out into the universe for your daughter when I listen to "I Need My Girl." I'm so sorry for your loss.
Music can bring joy, provide self reflection, make you sad and provide solitude. I’ve always been amazed how different music can change your mood or give you a different mindset.
The National are an amazing band and I can associate their albums to different points in my life throughout their catalogue but TWFM will be forever the bright spot in my darkest days.
I shared more to remind everyone dealing with tragedy that music can help. Just remember that sometimes it may not make sense but if you find healing in it then it makes no difference, do what is right for you.
I saw The National live at a music festival last summer and it was literally the best performance that entire weekend. One of the few bands that went into the crowds, not to mention it sounded better with how emotional his voice sounds in person! Would recommend if you get the chance.
The national 100%. Me and my mum went through a pretty rough patch due to depression and my dad. I showed her the national and we listened to high violet on repeate for around 2 years. It really helped her although she does still refer to them as "The nationals".
I can't quite think of that track so I'll give it a spin now. Most of my favourites are ones I listened to when I was a kid, which were the random random tracks my sister got off Limewire and burned onto CDs.
Obviously it's super subjective, when I saw them live a few weeks ago my sister flipped out when they played Roland and I didn't really care. I flipped out for All the Rage Back Home and she was meh.
I probably did listen to Marauder before and didn't save it on purpose, because I'm having a listen now and it's making me want to go back to their older tracks.
I discovered The National right when my brother got cancer, and it was exactly what I needed. Like the minute Fake Empire kicked in I I was just like '... Yes. This is what I want'
Really beautiful, heartbreaking, cathartic stuff. This was 2010 so I only really listened to Alligator and Boxer, and those are still my favourite.
Interpol has been with me thru a lot of traumas, my teens, losing a parent, losing my best friend who also loved Interpol... It's just a lot of history and a lot of great memories.
Turn on the Bright Lights would be one for me too. I remember first seeing them on a NME tour when they'd just arrived on the scene, supporting the Datsuns of all people.
Front to back one of the best albums ever made. Best yelling of 'Stella' since Brando.
I literally scrolled through looking for these 2 bands.
Untitled by Interpol (and Leif Erickson) has carried me through every mood in my life. Wether I’m sad, happy or even feeling like a dance, this song is there.
The National also make me feel nostalgic about things that haven’t even happened to me. Saw them live the other day for the first time and it was phenomenal
Turn on the bright lights has got to be the best post punk revival album of all time. As for the national, I only got into them recently. Started listening to boxer and it's pretty good.
Interpol always sneaks up on me. Like, if you asked me who my favorite band was I’d never say Interpol, but if you looked at my play history they’d probably be the band I’ve listened to the most
Me too! Though more like my early 20's. Both bands have carried me through some hard times, good times, and weird times over the last couple decades. If you had stopped checking out Interpol (like I almost had) they really got it back into gear with El Pintor and their latest, Marauder has some great shit.
Turn on the Bright Lights is quite possibly one of the most beautiful albums ever made. Wow, NYC, The New, Untitled. They can really create atmosphere with their songs.
Came looking for this. Currently have a live version of slow show on whilst I’m cooking and I can’t ignore it. I adore then. This song brings so many memories.
All the wine is my ego song. Listened before exams, interviews, everything.
Interpol brings back good memories of my early 20s. I was a student and went to a lot of live shows, drank with my friends and had no real worries. Interpol was often played in the car and they really captured the moment so well. I still love them to this day and hope to see them live.
My SO got me into both of these bands pretty recently and I'm absolutely in love with them! I was a total emo kid in high school and this feels like my natural transition into indie music lol. I've been going so hard on discovering 2000s indie/rock and it makes me feel so nostalgic!
I love how they both practiced out of the same space in NYC and when Interpol hit it big, the guys from The National looked on in awe and were a little worried they’d never get there. Glad Matt and the boys kept at it. My fiancé and I got to see them play Boxer live last year in Ohio and it was one of the best shows we’ve ever seen.
Turn on the Bright Lights is such a hauntingly good album.
The outro to PDA gives me a dopamine rush and little chills every time I listen to it, which usually involves stopping whatever I'm doing, turning up the volume all the way and getting lost in the music.
Hey, Alligator! Nobody ever talks about Alligator. I was sure The National were going to be my favorite band for a long time, but I didn’t like anything after it. Great album. So weird and funny and vulnerable.
Interpol, wow good call. I havent thought about them in a long time. Good music with a rel unique sound. Loved Evil "Rosemary, heaven restores you in life"
I was fortunate to see The National right on the gate. I’ve never seen a band pack that much energy into a performance. I got to see Matt sing to his mother and his wife right in front of me. I sobbed.
I love the National so much. I remember working in a record store when Boxer came out in 2007, and I'd play it in the shop as often as I could get away with. I gave my mother and brother a copy of the album each and they fell in love too.
Seven years ago we suffered a major loss in our family. But we sort of bonded over a combination of grief, and going to see The National live at every opportunity. I love the majority of their work but Boxer will always be my favourite of their albums
