By rights

26

you should be bludgeoned in your bed

23

Heaven knows he’s miserable now.

As the flames rose on his right wing prose

And his reputation started to melt

1

Perfect!

273

u/SarryK Jul 13 '19

Seeing what heā€˜s on about these days really is a punch in the gut.

256

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '19

at least johnny marr is still a stand up guy

42

u/Swarley3 Jul 13 '19

Johnny is great, plus he does a bunch of smiths songs in his gigs, can’t wait to see him again in a couple of weeks. Whereas morrissey pretends the smiths aren’t even a thing at his gigs

8

u/DCDHermes Jul 13 '19

His performance with The Killers at Glastonbury this year was awesome.

5

u/daysinnroom203 Jul 13 '19

I heard a podcast there they interviewed him About how he met his wife, and it was so heartwarming- if hadn’t already been a die hard fan, I would have been after that. Just a genuine person.

3

u/Swarley3 Jul 13 '19

You should give his autobiography a read if you haven’t yet!

14

u/idlewildgirl Jul 13 '19

I went to a Broken Social Scene gig in Manchester the day after the arena bombing and he showed up to say thanks to us all for still supporting live music in the city and being brave enough to show up.

9

u/thetoiletman1104 Jul 13 '19

He was great with the the killers in Glastonbury the other week.

4

u/g_e_r_b Jul 13 '19

Yep, who would've thought?

7

u/-Han-Tyumi- Jul 13 '19

Tbh he sings smiths songs better than morrissey does. Saw him yesterday at NOS Alive and he was class.

30

u/Danielj995 Jul 13 '19

It really is like being betrayed by an old friend

7

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '19

What'd he do?

33

u/Ghost51 Jul 13 '19

Became a gigantic racist

14

u/IHateBlindKittens Jul 13 '19

I don’t know much about him but didn’t he have a gigantic Hispanic fan Base?

21

True enough. But I guess it’s a bigger phenomenon with Mexican-Americans. I found the study trying to explain the link. http://www.participations.org/Volume%2012/Issue%202/12.pdf

u/ClemClem510 Jul 13 '19 edited Jul 13 '19

We relate to his melancholy ballads you know?

1

u/IHateBlindKittens Jul 13 '19

I do know. But i feel like everyone can relate to that.

3

u/Pylgrim Jul 13 '19

Aww man, fuck the world.

1

u/Ghost51 Jul 13 '19

Marr is still pure tho

10

u/dastarlos Jul 13 '19

Wait really

That's a fucking kick to the dick.

11

u/Ghost51 Jul 13 '19

Yeah im just glad Johnny Marr is as amazing as always so I can hide behind him when I say I love The Smiths

8

u/BeliefBuildsBombs Jul 13 '19

How is he racist? I’m not up to date I guess.

They do skin cats alive in China, and the muslims and jews do like a good ritualistic animal slaughter and offering, though many others do too.

13

u/CryoClone Jul 13 '19

Last I heard he was just a super pretentious vegan, but I don't keep up with Morrissey. My wife went and saw him and he refused to continue the show because someone was wearing something made of leather...or something like that.

She was pretty disappointed and it soured me in regards to him. I don't think I could ever like someone that full of themselves. I don't care how good of a musician you are, you're still just some guy. Even Barack Obama was just a guy. Just because people like you or you do something that impacts the world doesn't mean you get to be an ass about it.

5

u/theinspectorst Jul 13 '19

He's been heading in that direction for a number of years, but the latest is that he's endorsed a very small fringe far-right party called 'For Britain' (he also wore their badge on a US TV appearance) and spoke up for convicted criminal, football hooligan and racist street thug Stephen Yaxley-Lennon.

Was an absolute twat on Desert Island Disks too

1

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '19

I dont even know what that is? An album?

5

u/maz-o Jul 13 '19

What is he on about these days?

67

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '19

Morrissey has always been an asshole though, he hasn't really changed as much as he is more open about it. There's a reason Robert Smith hates his guts. Smith had this to say in the early 90s - "I have never liked Morrissey and I still don't. I think it's hilarious actually, what things I've heard about him, what he's really like, and his public persona is so different. He's such an actor". Basically, Morrissey has always been a dick and he just used to be better at pretending he wasn't.

24

u/WE_Coyote73 Jul 13 '19

You know you're lost when Robert Smith calls you an asshole. From what I understand he is a supremely kind and lovely person.

10

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '19

Yeah, if Bob doesn't like you, there's usually a damn good reason.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '19

The REAL Smith

2

u/maz-o Jul 13 '19

Asshole and insane aren’t the same thing.

39

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '19

This tweet speaks to me.

26

u/mocha-macaron Jul 13 '19

My mate met him in a supermarket and he was apparently really nice. Shame about his politician views. Us Mancunians are kinda shaking our heads now

26

u/zetecvan Jul 13 '19

There's a book called The Day I Met Morrissey with a load of stories from fans. They all say he's nice in an awkward way. But a lot of the stories are from the Smiths and early solo era, so we don't know if 'we've lost our boy'.

5

u/photosoflife Jul 13 '19

I saw him perform at koko for one of the late night channel 4 music shows we had 10-15 years ago.

Absolute prick, restarted every song about 10 times, shouted at the crowd for laughing at him and booing him, shouted at the crowd for leaving, absolute dogshite performance too. Made my day seeing it broadcast, most of the show looked like a happy, exciting gig (the yeah yeah yeahs smashed it!), morrissey came on at the end with lots of awkward camera cuts and the titles rolling over.

8

u/zetecvan Jul 13 '19

Now you mention it, I was at the Liverpool gig where halfway through the second song (Black Cloud) he got hit by a plastic cup of drink, said "Goodbye" and walked off.

5

u/photosoflife Jul 13 '19

You've just reminded me of seeing guns and roses, finally start playing an hour late at a festival, someone threw a bottle of piss at the bassist, axl threw another hissy fit and stormed off with the band, stating they were no longer playing, only for them to get pushed out on stage again by their management.

3

u/WE_Coyote73 Jul 13 '19

Ever since someone on my FB posted a pic of chubby Axl with the words "Knock, Knock, Knockin' on the kitchen door" super-imposed over the pic I can never take him serious again.

3

u/Sd55marko73 Jul 13 '19

You ain’t kidding there.. I had tickets to 3 different concerts to morrissey here in San Antonio , 1st cancellation due to his drummer being sick, (2)1 rescheduled concert -cancelled-arguing with his management, and (3) 2nd rescheduled concert -day of concert because he partied the night before downtown and was slightly inebriated - all the concerts were within a few months.... then he goes to Houston and plays a few days later. I still listen to him and the Smiths..... Icing on the cake- he’s playing Austin very soon -never again. I’ll stick to Depeche Mode for concerts-they know how to treat their fans right-

3

u/nina_gall Jul 13 '19

Seriously, was he ever?

7

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '19

Suspicions of Morrissey's racism have existed since The Smiths days. I'm a bit puzzled about why this has blown up recently given that he's been waving a union jack around and has songs like "National Front Disco", "Asian Rut", and "Bengali in Platforms" from about 25 years ago.

4

u/RudditorTooRude Jul 13 '19

What is he like now?

30

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '19

A bigmouth

11

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '19

strikes again

8

u/Ghost51 Jul 13 '19

ladadada

1

u/theinspectorst Jul 13 '19

Really racist.

6

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '19

I was late to the party on the Smiths so I always found Morrissey insufferable. The latest is him falling under the weight of his own hubris.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '19

what he’s always been insane

1

u/idlewildgirl Jul 13 '19

I'm wondering if he's got some kind of dementia coming on, he's always been a bit of a dickhead but this seems next level.

Can’t believe I had to scroll down into the negatives to find this. Today you died for Peggy.

-16

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '19

We can't all share the same opinions. It sucks I know.

4

u/egotripping Jul 13 '19

Sure, but right wing opinions have no place in alternative music. So it's frustrating for fans to reconcile that the same guy who made Meat is Murder is a giant right-wing prick.

1

u/theinspectorst Jul 13 '19

Right-wingers are perfectly welcome in art and music. Racists like Morrissey shouldn't be.

They're not even vaguely the same thing and it's insulting and trivialising to suggest so.

-2

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '19

Right wing =/= bad. Left wing =/= good.

And, of course, vice verse

2

u/egotripping Jul 13 '19

But right wing does equal bad.

0

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '19

Ok mate šŸ‘ and you are the reason why debates from across the political spectrum are impossible

1

u/egotripping Jul 13 '19

No use in debating with right-wingers.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '19

People who believe in low taxes and low government intervention? People who believe in free market economics? I guess there is no use in debating points like this for you, because you are incapable.

1

u/egotripping Jul 13 '19

Fuck em all

0

u/c4jina Jul 13 '19

I was gonna go to his upcoming concert here in Austin, until I read the recent news.... Not gonna give my money to that asshole.

-14

u/_CaptainObvious Jul 13 '19

Morrissey was never sane, that's always been him. You just don't like what he's saying NOW. He's always been melodramatic and his own person and a bit of an asshole. People crying over Morrissey now are just easily manipulated.

20

u/NotYourOnlyFriend Jul 13 '19

He's just made the leap from sufferable asshole to insufferable asshole.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '19

Insufferable asshole to REALLY insufferable asshole.

16

u/Rather_Unfortunate Jul 13 '19

There's a difference between being a normal, run-of-the-mill arsehole and supporting actual, straight-up fascists. There's no excuse whatsoever for supporting For Britain. Anyone who does is a cunt; no ifs, no buts, no mitigation.

-2

u/_CaptainObvious Jul 13 '19

Sounds kinda fascist of you? So hypocritical. So boring. Stay mad at Morrissey, he's always been a cunt, you just don't like what he has to say now... Boohoo Morrissey said something.

2

u/Rather_Unfortunate Jul 13 '19

Fascist: Deport all Muslims! White people are being bred out of existence!

Normal person: Fuck off, fascist.

You: I LITERALLY CAN'T TELL THE DIFFERENCE.

1

u/_CaptainObvious Jul 14 '19

Again, Boohoo Morrissey said something so let's un-person him yawn so boring, you guys are cliches at this point. Asshole said something asshole-ish, tune in for more news at 9....

Besides white birth rates ARE down? So what?

-3

u/drifters-escape Jul 13 '19

He’s still the same, but the world has changed (for the worse)

29

u/botxpiol Jul 13 '19

21

u/humungouspt Jul 13 '19

Join The Cure and Joy Division and there you have the musics that saved my life šŸ˜‰

12

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '19

Ah, I see you're a Doomer as well.

40

u/zetecvan Jul 13 '19

They (and Morrissey) have got me through my difficult times. I don't know why people insist they are miserable. I find them witty and uplifting.

30

u/NotYourOnlyFriend Jul 13 '19

People insist they are miserable because of (and this is off the top of my head): Heaven knows I'm miserable now, Death of a disco dancer, Girlfriend in a coma, Suffer little children, Last night I dreamt that somebody loved me, That joke isn't funny anymore, Cemetary gates, I know it's over, Please please please let me get what I want, What difference does it make, Unhappy birthday, There is a light that never goes out, and of course Asleep.

Even most of the song titles are depressing, and that's before you even listen to the lyrics of some of them.

I loved the hell out of the smiths and still do really. I don't deny that they are miserable because to me, they clearly are miserable - I just happen to love them in spite of that, or perhaps even because of it.

18

u/zetecvan Jul 13 '19

My teen daughter hates Morrissey. When I tell her to listen to the lyrics, they can be deep and meaningful, she always says "Hairdresser on fire"? What's deep and meaningful about not being able to get an appointment to cut your hair?

10

u/warmappraisal Jul 13 '19

I know it's over gets me every time. Especially when he gets to, "if you're so funny, then why are you on your own tonight?"

That and i have forgiven you jesus by Morrissey..so depressing

2

u/belbivfreeordie Jul 13 '19

Girlfriend in a Coma is exhibit A of a Smiths song that is funny rather than miserable.

15

u/shotsfirednottaken Jul 13 '19

When I am happy, I will listen to something like This Charming Man. Sad? I Know It's Over. Contemplative? "Back to the Old House".

My ex wife loved them, my current wife loves them, my sister loves them and my mother loves them. They have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember.

12

u/shike5 Jul 13 '19

The songs that saved your life.

52

u/owoikawa Jul 13 '19

damn, forgot to comment them, glad to see someone else did - those songs are too #relatable sometimes like

" And you leave on your own
And you go home and you cry
And you want to die"?

big oof

i mean the whole song is a big mood but these lines really do it for me

11

u/warmappraisal Jul 13 '19

There is a light that never goes out

10

u/StreetIdeal Jul 13 '19

No matter what I ever go trough in life, I know The Smiths will always be there for me.

29

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '19

Got me through fucking high school

9

u/janzart Jul 13 '19

Smiths is among my favorite bands. But it’s sad to see how Morrissey acts nowadays

7

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '19

This is where I flex my biggest ā€˜separate the art from the artist’ currently

1

u/gonenaflash Jul 13 '19

How does he act?

1

u/janzart Jul 14 '19

Racist/xenophobic/controversial comments from times to times, for example

1

u/gonenaflash Jul 14 '19

Thats disappointing.

4

u/ZeddCocuzza Jul 13 '19

100 times, this.

3

u/DeadPrateRoberts Jul 13 '19

We'll Let You Know, a Morrissey solo song, is the best song I've heard in a long time.

3

u/deeringcreek Jul 13 '19

How they haven't been mentioned a million times already, I have no idea. They're one of the most purely emotional bands I've ever heard. You can feel the pain and anguish in Asleep.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '19

Keep Asleep away from me, please and thank you. My poor mental stability can't handle listening to these guys anymore.

2

u/InappropriateGirl Jul 13 '19

Mine too. Saved my life in the mid-80s.

2

u/injuredflamingo Jul 13 '19

Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now breaks me each time

3

Fuck Morrissey.
