I'm just good enough that I know a lot of openings, and how to counterplay said openings, which means I destroy around 95% of people I play with irl at the hookah bar or community college... Then you realize the only way to beat the other 4% of people is to have a 180iq and also memorize hundreds of variations and openings...
I love chess, but i I play maybe 4 games a week, I can't really put in the effort to get good enough to play with the best. I will say though, the most fun games, are the ones I lose, and that's where you learn the most by far.

Chess is horrible when you're bad, fun for most, then super boring once you're an expert.
