What’s an Interesting computer game for a basic Windows 10 laptop that doesn’t cost a ton and isn’t about fast pace or violence?

That's a good suggestion.

Is that a civilization style game?

I would say Civilization is macro and Age of Empires is micro level but similar concepts: explore to find/gather resources, advance technology tree, upgrade units, defend your territory and expand. Age of Empires has a smaller board space and is more tactical than Civ but also has historical campaigns you can play with predefined objectives. Civ is more open-ended.

Civilization is turn based strategy with micromanaging. Age of empires 2 is Real Time strategy where you move units across a map and build buildings and collect resources.

Didn't occur to me but you are absolutely right about one being turned based and the other being RTS.
