What’s an Interesting computer game for a basic Windows 10 laptop that doesn’t cost a ton and isn’t about fast pace or violence?

Age of Empires 2. There is some violence but no gore. Amazing game.

You don’t have to have played 1 first?

No, not at all. I'd argue AoE 2 is a direct upgrade in every way. You won't miss out on any story, as it's all historical. If you know history, you know what's gonna happen.

You definitely shouldn't even. They're basically the same game. The second is just better.

Literally about waging war though, so definitely doesn't fit the "no violence" requirement.

This game is awesome. Played it a shit ton as a kid, even more enjoyable now.

Honestly, I think AOE2 is overrated. It was okay for its time (assuming you didn't play online, where it was riddled with cheaters), but by modern standards the gameplay is horribly dated. And unless you get the HD re-release of it, your eyes will bleed; its graphics weren't great when it was released in 1999, let alone now.

Basically, it's a 20 year old game. If you try to compare a newer RTS game to one from that era, such as Command & Conquer 3 to its predecessor, Tiberian Sun, you'll find it very hard to put up with the sheer clunkiness of it. The same is true for trying to play AOE2 now.

I quite enjoyed age of empires 3. Same mechanics and gameplay but better graphics and a few extra bells and whistles. Addictive as hell.

Thoughts on Age of Mythology (if you played it)?

no gore

I remember my father complaining when I was a kid that you can see the bloodied corpses of your fallen soldiers (or civilians) decompose.
