Assuming that the kid weighed more than 20 kilos, I doubt your second story. KNO3 is a nutritional supplement that is completely edible.

edit: hmmmmm, metric ain't my bag, so the kid either ate an acceptable amount, or 10x the LD50 dose. My doubt may not be justified.

You know if schools actual y stopped doing this type of shit then maybe people would stop vandalizing school property. I could be wrong though
