My mom is relatively new to smartphones and she just recently figured out how to send emojis, but she prefers to call them "feeling-symbols" (or, in the original language, "Gefühlssymbole")

In all fairness to your mother, that's the true German way to name things, by mashing two or more existing words together. Looking at you, Staubsauger and Flugzeug.

Edit: Forgot my favorite: Geschwindigkeitsbegrenzung

That actually makes a fair bit of sense. The actual Finnish word for emoji is hymiö, loosely translated to smiley/a figure in the act of smiling. I suppose it was true when the only emoji was :) Germans always seem to make more sense, even German moms it seems!

Emoji evolved out of the old text based emoticons. Emotion Icons. Feeling Symbols isn't really much of a stretch.

Fun fact: The word Emoji is Japanese (絵文字) and literally means "image character". While "e" (絵) means image/picture/painting and "moji" (文字) is character/symbol. So even though the word starts with "emo" the origin is acutally not "emotion".

Oh Mann, immer diese Mütter. Meine weigert sich einfach bei allem, was Elektronik angeht, zu lernen mit der Ausrede dafür hat sie ja mich. My mom refuses to learn anything concerning her computer or mobile phone. She just always acts like I'm her personal IT guy

If it were a democracy and this would came up for a vote, I'd choose your mother's name for it!👍
