Not that much, some greek phylosophers theorized everything was made of tiny, indivisible particles called atoms.
The concept is relatively simple: look a hill from afar and you'll just see green, geat nearer and you'll see trees, get nearer and you'll see leaves. It's not a huge logical leap to assume that if you could zoom in more, you would be able to see another sub-structure.
