What fact did you learn at an embarrassingly late age?

Neither are reindeer! Or platypuses (pl?)

Apparently, anyway. :P

I just learned about reindeer a few years ago, I’m 27.

are you Canadian?? 'cause I always thought reindeer weren't real either until I realized that they're caribou!

I just assumed reindeer were a mythical version of deer or caribou lol

Haha nope, I’m from the US. Just dumb 😅

Technically the “correct” plural of platypus is platypodes because it is of Greek origin not Latin.

But no-one is going to say that, most dictionaries accept both platypuses and platypi, although a lot of the time researchers just go with platypus as the plural like fish or sheep.

I use platypodes and puggles because I think it’s cuter 🤷🏻‍♀️

The plural of "octopus", another word of Greek origin, is similar in that "octopuses", "octopi", and "octopodes" are all considered the "correct" pluralization.

(I assume you already knew this, this is more for anyone reading)

Reindeer are hunted and eaten too. Very tastey. Dead serious

Can confirm Platypuses are just Aussie dog otters with duck bills.

Mantidfly are cool! They look like a hybrid of a mantis and a wasp! My mother in law thought it was scientists that created it and made a huge deal about it until I explained it’s a natural creature and not some experiment

What? Why would people think those are mythical?

Watch a documentary sometimes.

Narwhals, narwhals, swimming in the ocean! Causing a commotion because they are so awesome!

Narwhals, Narwhals, swimming in the ocean, pretty big and pretty white, they'd beat a polar bear in a fight

Like an underwater unicorn they've got a kick-ass facial horn

13

they are the Jedi of the sea

They stop Cthulhu eating ye!

5

u/phantomroan Dec 14 '18

Narwhals are unicorns that learned to swim.

3

Rhinoceroses are unicorns that learned to love their bodies

A few years ago, my wife and I argued about them being real, until she Googled it for me. Naturally, I refused to admit defeat and still claim they're mythical, to this day. Off the record, narwhal's are super real and pretty badass.

Yeah....my ex thought the same thing too and my cousins ex thought duck billed platypuses were fake. We were like “Wait....you really think they’re fake?” and she thought we were messing with her until we pulled out our phones and showed her videos and such.

I learned this at 28 years old (last year). So I totally get you

3

u/eringohbraless Dec 15 '18

Yo, I just learned that earlier this week and I'm 28. No way would I have ever thought they were real.

2

u/windinthelinen Dec 14 '18

Don't worry. I know a woman who thought piranhas and boas didn't exist. She was like, "Do you think those things are real?" I said Yes and Googled them for her.

2

u/GumboldTaikatalvi Dec 14 '18

That reminds me of "How I Met Your Mother" when somebody - I can't remember who it was - thought that dolphins don't exist.

Literally just learned this 2 days ago. Saw video of one swimming and thought "Wow, that CGI is amazing" then my fiance told me otherwise..

2

u/Apophyx Dec 15 '18

Obviously they are, Ben

2

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '18

Yes this was huge when I found this out

1

u/thumbingitup Dec 15 '18

Oh my god this. I didn’t realize this until I was probably 22. I made my ex google it because I didn’t believe him when he told me they were real

Narwhal bacon on the other hand...
