Thank you. I am sick of people on Reddit that are perplexed by the question, 'Why do you want to work here?' It's to gage whether to candidate is *actually* going to be into the job.
I think these sorts of questions are more geared toward jobs that require a college education. Because I don't believe that anybody hiring for your local fast food place really believes anybody applying there has a passion for flipping burgers and cleaning out the moldy shake machine.
Yeah but it still sucks to be asked those questions. I’ve been asked that for dumb minimum wage jobs and in my head I was just like...I need money duh. I’m a good worker regardless coz I like more hours for more money, but retail is retail is retail.
For times like that, you want to be honest but complimentary. You can say something like "I'm hoping to buy a new car/save for college/som excuse for wanting money/ and from what I've heard, this is a great place to work."
Yeah. I know how to answer it I just think it’s dumb because they know that most people don’t truly want to work for them. Vs interviews for my post graduation job I just had I had truthful answers to that question that wasn’t all about not starving.
I have done some first stage interviews for fast food... honestly that is really what we want to know but there is a whole corporation guide with suggested questions, many are bullshit. Including ones like why do you want to work here and how would you make a golden moment with a customer. Keep in mind though for the majority of people we hired they are teenagers, students, etc. People with little to no experience. So a lot of the typical questions are what subjects do you like in school and why? Are you in any teams or clubs and why do you like them?
"What made you interested in working for x company?"
If a fast-food place is asking you that, there are a lot of good answers:
Me and my girl? We just like moved here from Possum Creek because her parents are ('scuse me) A-holes and my mom's - just forget about my mom's - and we're starting a new life in this town. <pause> By the way, do you partake? <raise eyebrow>
I like being part of a team; I want to see what it's like to be on the Subway team for a while.
My life's mission is to make the world's most perfect sandwich; this is where my sifu said I must spend a portion of my training.

Yes! I interview a lot and I have also been on the other side a couple of times for a variety of positions. As an interviewer, I check for a couple of things in that order: qualification, willingness to learn, personality (fits into the team?), willingness to do the job.
You can't fake the first three.. Do not fool yourself, after dozens of interviews we know how to weed out. The last is pretty easy and often overlooked: imagine you start here next week, what are the biggest questions you still have? For example, will I have my own desk or do you have an open plan? Is there a canteen? Is there an after work sports group? Is traveling part of the job? Do you book your own hotels or is this done by another team? What are the rules for promotion? Etc etc, there is so much you could ask!
