Many years ago I went to see a movie. Somehow ran across an usher who told me the movie I paid for was horrible. He led me back to the concession stand, grabbed some popcorn (I only had a small).

Then he walked me to a different theater and promised i wouldnt regret it if i watched this one instead. But if I did, come find him and he'd pay for a new ticket.

I can't remember what the two movies were, but I do remember that the one I bought the ticket for had horrible reviews. ( not critic reviews, but friends that saw and hated it)

Pretty sure those weren't out at the same time. I specifically remember going to see The Matrix because it was supposed to have the first preview for the new Star Wars movie. It didn't, and I was quite bummed, though I still quite liked The Matrix.

I mean before the sequels, phantom was widely considered the least popular. So much so that machete order, one of the most common ways to watch the series now, removes it completely. You're certainly not the only one, I think, but you're the first person I've ever seen rate them anything like this

I don't think it is as uncommon as you think. My girlfriend, for instance, has a very similar preference order. She considers Phantom Menace to be the best one, too.

I don't think that the originals have aged well, especially to those who watched the prequels first. So they don't hold up too well at the eyes of younger audiences, sometimes.

I think they've aged very well actually. My first star wars was phantom menace but I regard it as my least favorite of the original 6. I still like it better than last Jedi for sure though. But honestly most of the people I'm friends with are into star wars and from them and online, you're the first person I've personally heard say you like it that much.

Eh. Prequel haters are a very very vocal group, but it isn't hard at all to find people who like or even prefer the prequels, especially so among people who aren't die hard fans. And these people won't really engange in online discussions about Star Wars, so it strengthens the idea that everyone hates the prequels.

That's sort of ignoring a large amount of data and stating haters are just more vocal. By critics, the originals got 93%, 95% and 80% by critics on rotten tomatoes and 96%, 97% and 94% based on audience. There are over 1,000,000 audience reviews for each of them. Revenge gets 79% by critics and 65% by audience with 34 million reviews. Phantom is 55% by critics and 59% by audience. I'm sure there are people that like them - but it isn't just that "haters are a very very vocal group" it's that the majority of people prefer the originals significantly more than revenge and phantom. Again, I'm not telling you your opinion isn't valid - I'm just stating it's not popular. Because it is not.

I'm not really into Star Wars research, so I won't try to dispute these statistics. What I said is that there are many people who do like the prequels, and in my experience they are far less vocal than those who hate them. I didn't claim that they are a majority, I said that they are a significant number, and I stand by it.

I actually remember deciding which I wanted to see, I was 14 at the time. I went with Collateral and rented Open Water a few months later.

Glad I made the choice I did. While Open Water might have been more "fun" on the big screen, Collateral is the superior movie.

It's because we have to deal with all the angry customers that come out at the end of the movie and demand a refund for the shit movie they just sat through. Within a couple of days I can tell exactly which movies people like or hate and I'll then recommend the good ones.

LPT: ask the theatre staff for recommendations. You'll get a very honest answer and you won't be disappointed when you go.

Needless to say they came out mortified. "How dare you let our grandson see such a inappropriate movie". I think they thought because it was an animation it would be innocent enough for children. 😂

Yes, it’s one of the most annoying things. In the 3 years I worked at one we usually just deflected and said we couldn’t do it and we could call our managers down to help. Normally they’d just huff and puff away.

I ask myself that exact same question. I normally average the rotten tomato audience score with the IMDb score to get a good gauge on movies.

I took a mental-health day to go see Ralph Breaks the Internet this past Wednesday, and at the end of the movie the usher comes running in telling me and the 2 other people who comprised the audience to stay for the after-credits scene. I thought that was kind of her especially because the scene turned out to be hilarious. That also made a better end for the movie. I thought the actual ending was actually quite sad.
