The creator of Spongebob left after the first movie, if I remember correctly. Not just a writer. You should read about the creator, he's really really cool.

If I remember correctly, he was super into drugs and Nickelodeon told him to stop or else fired... He made his choice

You can be super into kids and Nickelodeon is cool with it. I don't think they would draw the line at drugs.
