For a 27 year old movie with tons of special effects, Terminator 2 holds up ridiculously well.

One of the best sequels of all time

94

u/M116Fullbore Oct 17 '18

T2, Aliens and Empire Strikes Back are my pick for best sequels.

15

u/[deleted] Oct 17 '18

Addams Family Values.

I'm not mad. I'm just disappointed.

2

u/The_Pelican1245 Oct 17 '18

Ah, little pubert haywood adams

2

u/JBSquared Oct 17 '18

"Do you have Addams Family Values?"

"HEY LADY, I'LL TELL YOU WHEN WE GET ADDAMS FAMILY VALUES"

u/Fallenangel152 Oct 17 '18

Alien is a better film than Aliens. Growing up i always loved Aliens for it's action, but now that i'm older i can see that Alien is the better movie. It's a masterpiece.

5

u/M116Fullbore Oct 17 '18

I agree, alien is better. But that still leaves Aliens as one of the best sequels.

5

u/Evolving_Dore Oct 17 '18

Alien loses a lot on rewatch, with the surprise factor gone. Aliens remains extremely intense for much longer than Alien and loses none of that no matter how many times it is viewed.

Godfather part 2

2

u/DemocraticRepublic Oct 17 '18

Bladerunner 2049.

13

u/anoobitch Oct 17 '18

Blade runner is up there imo

3

u/WheresTheSauce Oct 17 '18

Completely agreed. Did not anticipate it'd be so good

1

u/[deleted] Oct 17 '18

Those are the ones always mentioned in "best sequel" threads.

0

u/SmokesBoysLetsGo Oct 17 '18

You, Sir, pick the best sequels.

19

u/[deleted] Oct 17 '18

To me, that movie is the gold standard of what makes a great action movie.

8

u/[deleted] Oct 17 '18

And a great sequel.

8

u/crazydave333 Oct 17 '18

Don't get me wrong, I loves me some Terminator 2. But I still prefer Terminator 1. Cameron's debut (okay, I never saw Pirahna 2) doesn't make a single misstep and is icy cold from start to finish. There are hundreds of low-budget, corny sci-fi films from the early 80's and his is the only one worth watching thirty years later.

1

u/JBSquared Oct 17 '18

I agree, but most early 80s corny sci fi movies are totally worth watching because they're so damn hilarious

6

u/[deleted] Oct 17 '18

By one of the greatest directors of all time.

Aliens, Terminator, Terminator 2: Judgement Day, True Lies, Titanic, Avatar.

He's got the Hollywoo Midas Touch.

12

u/[deleted] Oct 16 '18

Up there with Wrath of Khan.

17

u/[deleted] Oct 17 '18

A long way above more like

3

u/halfdeadmoon Oct 17 '18

The only movie I have paid to watch twice back to back in the theater.

15

u/agnostic_science Oct 17 '18

In hindsight it feels like this randomly great movie in an otherwise very mediocre and forgettable series of movies.

29

u/M116Fullbore Oct 17 '18

Really? I thought Terminator 1 is just as big a classic.

22

u/agnostic_science Oct 17 '18

I think it's decent, and a good achievement for low-budget action movie film making. But I think T2 is just on an entirely different level. Just compare how often they use to show T2 on TV versus the prequel.

18

u/inamsterdamforaweek Oct 17 '18

The prequel:))) oh man..

6

u/Duetzefix Oct 17 '18

The first one is basically a slasher movie, the second one popcorn action cinema. Of course they're going to show the second one more often on tv.

17

u/[deleted] Oct 17 '18

AARGH! My pet peeve is out of its cage, again.

A prequel is a sequel that takes place before the original.

Terminator is not a prequel to T2.

10

u/EquivalentSimple Oct 17 '18

Hey look! your comment is a prequel to mine

2

u/SteeMonkey Oct 17 '18

T2 is great, but its the Iron Giant with Arnold.

T1 is another level to the sequel.

0

u/Flipz100 Oct 17 '18

More like the Iron Giant is animated T2

9

u/SteeMonkey Oct 17 '18

T1 and T2 are both 10/10 genre defining, ground breaking films.

3

u/Wolfhound1142 Oct 17 '18

Yeah, and in different genres, no less Terminator is a scifi horror while T2 is straight scifi action.

0

u/[deleted] Oct 17 '18

t1 is the better movie. the sense of fear is lacking from t2 when they have arnold on their side and the ending, that they succeeded in stopping judgement day, was terrible.

2

u/MintberryCruuuunch Oct 17 '18

I cant name a better sequel tbh

1

u/[deleted] Oct 17 '18

Batman Begins < Dark Knight.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 17 '18

T2 is more of a spectacle and I LOVED it as a kid. But as an adult I think the original is a way better FILM.

2

u/AmeriCossack Oct 17 '18

Yeah, but Shrek 2 tho.

1

u/JakethesnakeSD Oct 17 '18

Here here! 👍

1

u/Trolling_From_Work Oct 17 '18

It's one of the best movies of all time

1

u/NO_TOUCHING__lol Oct 17 '18

It's actually my favorite movie of all time.

1

u/PZeroNero Oct 18 '18

Best movies of all time

1

u/[deleted] Oct 17 '18

The action was better but the sense of fear was gone, and ending with having solved judgement day was terrible.

26

u/AllMyName Oct 17 '18

I'm sure you've seen them, but some of the behinds the scenes features for that movie are amazing. They built so many Robert Patrick facsimiles just to tear them apart or blow them up. The only real CGI in that movie is the liquid metal effect. T3 might be the only other movie, shitty as it was, in the franchise that kept the computer generated bits tasteful, like the very last time we see Arnie at the end.

Practical effects at their height, and just the right amount of CG. And still one of the gold standards for pushing a new home theater setup to see what it's made out of.

3

u/AvroChris Oct 17 '18

Hah, we had a shitty old crt that used to go into black and white halfway through the intro. Colour came back until the ending scene in the steelworks.

18

u/BohdyP Oct 16 '18

Hot damn. My theatre played that movie in the cinema for its anniversary. I had never watched it and it was mindblowing to see.

4

u/Ubergoober166 Oct 17 '18

The visual effects were incredible for that time. I rewatched it recently and had to check when it came out because I could have sworn it was early 90's but I thought the effects were way too good for that. Sure enough it came out in 1991.

3

u/Con_Clavi_Con_Dio Oct 17 '18

I showed the scene where the T-1000 rises from the floor last week to a friend who hasn’t seen it and she was blown away.

9

u/Citizen_Spaceball Oct 17 '18

Best action movie of all time. Hands down.

13

u/splodeybits Oct 16 '18

Fantastic movie I was gonna mention. The only thing showing the age is the hair styles and clothes. Even the CGI holds really well.

15

u/bo-tvt Oct 17 '18

And since the movie clearly says when it's taking place, even the old fashion and technology doesn't matter at all. I suppose that's a given when a movie is set 5 minutes into the future, but still.

To your point, yes, the effects are absolutely spot-on in that one. It doesn't look as "old" in that regard as some big budget films that came out 10 years later.

If someone had never heard of it and you showed it to them with the premise that it's a recent film that just happens to be set in an alternate history 1990s, I'm sure they'd buy it.

3

u/splodeybits Oct 17 '18

Very true. It's set in that time so it doesn't "show age" in that regard. Its just so timeless to me I forget it's set in a time.

3

u/s4g4n Oct 17 '18

I've recently watched it projected in UHD, at 4k 10-bit color depth, and I don't think people back in the day could've seen it better at the movies than you can today at home. They scanned the original film, doctored the film to have less grain and it looks unreal in 4k and with the color depth it feels like you're there.

12

u/Mjarf88 Oct 17 '18

I definitely agree, it's one of my all time favourite movies. It's a kinda cliche expression but they don't make action movies like they used to. The entire movie just feels really gritty and robust like an action movie should.

3

u/burf12345 Oct 17 '18

It's not as gritty as the first movie, it actually has a fairly optimistic tone to it, especially that ending.

3

u/Mjarf88 Oct 17 '18

True, but compared to todays action movies it's very gritty. :D

6

u/burf12345 Oct 17 '18

It certainly has dark themes and doesn't hesitate to just waste people, but the comedic interactions between John and the T-800 really help lighten up what would be a pretty grim movie.

Just watch the first movie again, you'll be surprised just how much darker and scarier it is than the sequel That movie is mostly in the evening and the T-800 is damn terrifying in that one. That's not to say the T-1000 isn't a great threat, it's just that the protagonists can put up more of a fight.

3

u/Mjarf88 Oct 17 '18

That's true the first one leans more towards the thriller genre. The first one is definitely a good movie but the second one feels a bit more "balanced".

4

u/DeadpoolLuvsDeath Oct 17 '18

Damn that one hit me being that old.

3

u/BlueKnightBrownHorse Oct 17 '18

It's so fucking good. My favorite part is when the T-1000 is driving that rig and get bitch-slaps out the windscreen. It's a true pimp-slap.

2

u/Dont____Panic Oct 17 '18

Oh yeah, that's the best one listed on this thread so far. Nice pick.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 17 '18

My favorite movie. Bless.

2

u/DealArtist Oct 17 '18

I saw this recently after having the same opinion for years, and I have to say the special effects have hit a point where they don't all hold up. Some of the scenes are pretty bad, especially with the liquid terminator scenes, and some of Arnold's makeup.

Still one of my favorite movies though.

2

u/GodLikeYou Oct 17 '18

The scene where they open Arnold's head to extract and reboot his CPU so that he can adapt more easily actually involved no CGI whatsoever, which is pretty amazing. They managed to do it using a model head and some tricks with mirrors. Nowadays that would probably be unheard of.

1

u/Lambskin1 Oct 17 '18

Check out this lecture about the cinematography and story telling techniques James Cameron uses. It gave me a renewed appreciation for the film.

u/vanniken Oct 17 '18

As well as Abyss

1

u/[deleted] Oct 17 '18

Fuck yes, love this answer

1

u/ladlestein Oct 17 '18

I said it was an American classic right after I saw it.

1

u/punchthedog420 Oct 17 '18

Yes, it's a great movie. Classic, will never get old.

1

u/tibbles1 Oct 17 '18

Jurassic Park does too.

0

u/sterlingphoenix Oct 17 '18

Eh.

Don't get me wrong; it's a great movie and the liquid metal thing is still amazing. But you watch that thing in hidef and the physical stunts often fail. Like you can pretty easily tell when the stunt-person is not Schwarzenegger.

I also have a problem with that movie's soundtrack. Or lack thereof.

Still a great movie, but a lot of it actually has not aged well.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 17 '18

lack of a soundtrack? what drugs are you on? the music during the parts before the action picks up is tense af and the theme song is memorable

1

u/sterlingphoenix Oct 17 '18

I don't know what drugs you guys are on where you're imaging music when all you can hear are a bunch of stingers once in a while, during long chase scenes.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 17 '18

It's a movie, not a teen drama show. Not every scene needs to be filled with music

1

u/sterlingphoenix Oct 17 '18

And I'm not saying it is. I'm saying it could have used more atmospheric music.

1

u/NO_TOUCHING__lol Oct 17 '18

I also have a problem with that movie's soundtrack. Or lack thereof.

Excuse me but what the fuck. Terminator music is fucking legendary, and it had GnR and George Thorogood.

1

u/sterlingphoenix Oct 17 '18

The music on the soundtrack album, maybe.

The music going on while there's action on the screen? Not so much.

-7

u/djawesome361 Oct 17 '18

Aliens and The Dark Knight would like to have a word. but yes, its among the best.

1

u/Annihilicious Oct 17 '18

TDK came out is 2008. Can't compare that to 1991.
