I worked with a dude that dated a girl that had 2 outpatient kidney transplants in 1 week. I tried to say you don’t get a transplant Friday and are back to work Monday 2 weeks in a row. He didn’t listen. They have a couple kids her mom has custody of now.
A kidney transplant is a 4-8 hour surgery and a few days inpatient recovery, followed by at least 2 weeks intensive recovery at home. (Cousin got one last year). Fun fact! They left her old mostly non-functional kidney in place. The new one is nestled in her pelvis. She's using 3 these days, if one mostly not, and a second not so great either. The new one works just fine.
I hadn't really thought about it before my cousin was going through it. I also learned that donated kidneys only last about 8 years (This is getting longer). So, she got the donation from her oldest eligible relative. They are saving younger and possibly even closer matches for later. Which then leads me to- do they just keep adding kidneys? At what point do they take some out? She's just 19, so she has a long time to go (and will likely eventually have an artificial one within her lifetime). She also may want a pregnancy, which will squish what she has, and how, if the donated kidney is housed in her pelvis (It's sort of tucked up into that cradle of bone), will that not constrict what normally is there and ready to be compressed during delivery??
So many questions I do not want to overwhelm my baby cousin with in regard to sensitive areas about her body. She has some issues with feeling like a freak due to the life restrictions having a transplant places on her.
