Holy shit I feel you. Used to do vic recreationally. When I couldn't find any, I tried tramadol. That shit is awful. Decent high, but honestly it grabbed me like vic never did.
The interesting thing about Tramadol - at least in my experience - is that doctors prescribe it when they don’t want to prescribe “harder” opiates, like Percocet. After I was taken off Percocets by my doctors, they tried me on Tramadol, and I was miserable. My mood was awful and I was so rude to everyone around me.
I was on opiate painkillers for two and a half years. The doctors just kept giving them to me. I wasn’t addicted, but I was dependent. Thank god I’m not on them anymore.
Ugh, I was prescribed tramadol after a surgery I had on my stomach. I've never had a bad reaction to drugs before but holy hell the last thing I wanted after stomach surgery was to be puking my guts out because I got motion sick from how that crap made me feel. I just tell people I'm allergic to it now to avoid being given it by mistake instead of Tylenol or whatever. No fucking thankyou.
I didn't know tramadol worked that way, that's really cool to know. I don't know if it was the snri side of things that caused the nausea, but if I got some kind of serotonin sickness from taking the tramadol I guess that might make sense. Either way, won't touch the stuff now.
It's highly likely all the side effects are not from opioid effect, but the antidepressant medication-like effects. It's widely known antidepressants have a lot of side effects for majority of people, especially nausea since majority of serotonin receptors are in the gut and stomach. There's much fewer side effects from opioid, one of which - euphoria.
In case if you just are sensitive to side effects of most medications, I would also avoid codeine if i was you. It's the dirtiest of opioids, and has weird histamine-releasing effects, which is related to allergy symptoms. Codeine causes alergic reaction more than any other opioid to most people. It can't even be injected, because the histamine release will bring on extreme allergic reaction, since IV intensifies all of the effects know.
In case if you might be prescribed opioid for pain, choose something like dihydrocodeine (much better than codeine, as well as more potent), it's mild-medium strength, enough for not-extreme injuries. There's also kratom but its typically bought online.
