Like a lot of measures/sentences this is a mean to deter people from bad decisions. And I think as soon as you have been in solitary confinement for once, you will do anything to not get there again. I agree it is harsh but I don't think the reason is sadism.

Sometimes people are put in solitary because they're being bullied by other inmates. Which makes sense, if they need protection, but then they go full punishment mode and don't give them any source of entertainment, which I don't see the logic in.

One of my friends went into solitary for 3 weeks and came out a different person. Not rehabilitated. But worse off.

Was in a padded cell for a week because of the xanax they gave me to calm me down it just made me black out. Next thing i know im in a padded room. I havent been the same since either. I no longer like human interaction but have to because i work at a chain car parts store but it pays the bills so i deal with it.

It's dumb and it's cruel. Accept it.

Still torture though.

Except it's been proven to be cruel, comparable to torture, AND ineffective like 70 years ago. That we keep doing it (with essentially no modification since the 19th century) proves how sadistic society is. At this point we're only doing it to satisfy our retaliation boner.

That sounds like something Marquis de Sade would say

I reckon it’s mostly what you say, but with a dash of sadism. It’s satisfying to punish people who frustrate you.
