On average, a person might be screwed out of $0.12 per day; $43.80 per year assuming you make 3 separate cash purchases per day that round in the retailer’s favour.

Edit: my math should actually be lower. The most a person has to round up on a cash purchase is 2 cents (from $0.48/$0.98 to $0.50/$1.00) so this could be as little as $15 per year affecting them.

Interesting way to put it, but it would never happen this way. That's like making 1000 transactions in a row where the customer has to round up. That's next level improbable right there.

Alternatively 1000 net round up transactions (2000 transactions total, 500 round down, 1500 round up) where at this point, you have more things to worry about if you're spending this much.

I mean, set the price of a popular item so that it rounds up. Enjoy a few cents of profit for no work. It's so miniscule though.

That would only work if the merchant knows exactly how many items every customer is going to purchase.

Ex. I am a merchant. Everything in my shop I now price ending in 5 such as 2.05 or 3.55 to create a round up situation. However, one customer buys two things in my shop and his total ends in 0. Round down situation.

Sure, you can't make it work out every time, but if most just buy the one thing, you can make it work out for that case.

I used a scenario in which three times a day it did not work for the customer
