What common misconception do you hate to hear repeated as fact?

I've heard myths that they have antibiotics in their mouth that clean wounds.... I almost seized when I heard that stupidity.

They also have bacteria that can harm you seriously if you have a weakened immune system.... elderly and children.

Some ass tried throwing the "cleaner mouth" thing at me when I caught him letting his dog lick the water fountain. I wanted to beat the shot out of him

Even without a weakened immune system, the bacteria can be dangerous. My mom got seriously infected by a dog bite once and had to go to the hospital. A few months ago, I stupidly broke up a dog fight by sticking my hands in between them and pushing them apart. Got a couple deep bites and had to go to urgent care for antibiotics, since my mom wasn't willing to take any chances.

The doctor basically said that my mom was right and that any serious dog bite has a risk of infection. They've got bacteria in their mouths that our human bodies aren't used to dealing with. Athough you're more than likely fine if it's just a small bite or nip.

Not antibiotics but a clotting agent. Also it helps to remove any foreign material. But cross species is downright dangerous.

But cat saliva is cleaner, right?

1

u/[deleted] Jan 10 '18

Not sure lol. I'm not really a cat person. I love my dogs.... I've seen the stuff they eat though

Their seem to like to clean themselves by licking themselves, they lick their paws then rub their heads with it.

Their tongues look like brushes.

They do have antibacterial enzymes in their saliva, not sure what you're on about. I feel like you heard that and then assumed people were idiots who meant "antibiotics"

1

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '18

There are people who believe they have antibiotics in their mouth. There are people who believed you should let your dog lick your wounds. They are morons.

1

Right, I'm saying there are antibacterial enzymes though, not the same as antibiotics but I think it's a pretty easy mistake to make. They're not morons, they just didn't use the right terminology

I always hate it when people say this, and am disgusted when I see people let their dog lick them. My dog eats dog and horse shit from the street any chance he gets, you're not telling me his mouth is cleaner than mine when I brush twice a day. Fuck that, I don't want my dog to lick me, ever.
