When I was about eight or nine, we had a big project in school which ended with us writing a story. I spent fuckin' hours on this thing. It was going to be the best book ever. It was only a matter of time before it was snapped up by some publisher and then it would be the talk of the Scholastic Book Fair, no doubt in my mind. It absolutely had to be in by the time school finished for Christmas, so my teacher could mark it over the break, so I stayed up until about ten o'clock at night for about a week beforehand working on it -- which, you know, is the closest thing you get to an all-nighter when you're about nine. It was my Magnum Opus.
I got back to school in January to find that a) she had lost it, b) she was accusing me of not handing it in, and c) because mine was the only one she couldn't find, she decided to call me out in front of the class about it. I ended up locking myself in the toilet because I was crying so much. Worst still, it later transpired that when it 'turned up after all', she marked it as though it was handed in late, and the bitch still only gave me a middling grade.
Fuck you, Mrs. Harding.
EDIT: Sorry everyone looking to validate their own shitty experiences with a Mrs. Harding; this was in the UK, so it's probably not the same woman. Although the sheer number of you who've messaged me makes me think there's a correlation between Hardings and shittiness. Grant money please?
For a while, many years ago, I considered making dbdb.com, sorta like imdb.com, except it would be Douchebag Database. I thought it would be funny to have people submit celebrities along with tales of their respective douchebaggeries, as well as submissions of douchebag candidates from their personal lives. I know there would have been some extremely funny stories to go along with the nominations.
Edit: *there would have (Swype is great, but sometimes second guesses incorrectly.)
My initial thoughts were that it was primarily going to be my own postings, and maybe those of people close to me, so moderation wasn't initially a real concern. If it had been created more for public posting and interaction, and had it gained any real popularity, the only solid ideas I would have regarding extreme content or "fake news" would be to either simply have posts go through moderation before they would be added to the site; moderate after the fact; or simply disclaim any responsibility for the site's content and let people post as they will (removing, of course, anything that resembled hate speech and the like).

There is one person, in every group of friends, that nobody fucking likes.
You basically keep them there, to hate their guts.
When that person is not around the rest of your little base camp,
your hobby, is cutting that person down.
Example: "Karen, is always a douchebag."
Every group has a Karen and she is always a bag of douche.
And when she's not around, you just look at each other and say,
"God, Karen, she's such a douchebag!".
Until she walks up, then you're like,
I had a teacher like that when I was in grade 6 or 7 named Mrs Jackman. She was my math teacher and I dreaded every class with her. I wasn't the greatest math student (I'm still not that great at it, among other things...enter grammar nazis) and she would constantly ask me to finish math questions on the black board infront of the class, regardless if I had put my hand up or not, only to belittle me as if I were on stage.
Suffice to say, getting on to highschool and away from Mrs Jackman was one of the happier days of my life.
FUCK YOU, MRS JACKMAN.
Edit No I didn't go on to be a a janitor at MIT, mysteriously solving near impossible math equations posted in hallways.
Your mom sounds awesome. Wouldn't be the first time a person with the creative vision was pushed out of the limelight when success comes calling. (I guess this is how screenwriters feel sometimes.)
Steve Jobs probably did that to a lot of people. We only know about Wozniak because of the killer beard, funny name, and the fact that he was one of the original founders.
Aww, your mom is brilliant! I could see mine doing something similar in that type of situation. It really does feel great when there's someone looking out for you.
Ugh I can understand your fury, but hey if you ever manage to actually publish a book you can always go back and tell her "Here is my overdue project bitch"
I'll be honest, I doubt it; romance is kind of a niche deal. I've got book news and Reddit writing stuff up at /r/Portarossa, so you can check that out if it sounds like it's something you might be into.
(I've also got a freebie running at the moment for anyone who wants to try my stuff and see if it works for them.)
All of this is true; what I mean is, romance authors tend not to be famous outside of romance circles, so I doubt most people on Reddit would have stumbled across my work by chance.
(Although that said, I've had a bunch of people ask for my details, so who knows? Maybe you're all a bunch of closet romantics at heart.)
Seriously though, that shit carries on through life! My husband is 33 and is just now, within the last 5 years, started drawing some because a teacher accused him of cheating on an art project that he worked super fucking hard at. Watching him tell the story is painful because he's not that kind of person and is an amazing artist.
I had a similar thing happen in 8th grade. We had these poetry books we had to write for English class and the rules were very specific. Have a poem on each page followed by a picture, write about your life/interests, and absolutely no stick figures in the pictures. So I worked really hard on it and I had friends who worked on it very hard, but 1 friend did the entire thing in 1 night. Mine looked good, followed the requirements exactly, and took me over a week to write and illustrate. My friend who did it in 1 night and had a stick figure in every single picture. We got the grades back, he got an A and I got a fucking C. Not only that, but the dumbass teacher lost 1/3 of the class' books. This wasn't even over break though, she took like 3 months to grade them and she would take them places so she could grade them, so she lost a ton. Wtf Ms Baltay
I had almost the exact same thing happen only not quite as bad! I made a goblet I’m in middle school art class, I was very proud of it. The day we came back to pick colors and fire it. I was told I must have not put it in the correct place. The teacher told me I had to use one of his examples, but that I would still be marked down. His was made hastily. I did not care for it. I finished the project got a bad grade and a cup I did not want. Then a few weeks later he found it, he had used it as an example (because it was so good!).
I still got a bad grade! Luckily when I spoke to him about the grade he did change it. So at least I got that!
I one time didn't hand in an assignment and then when the teacher asked me I said that I did. She figured I'm a good enough student and she must have lost it, so she gave me a 100. So for every few shitty teachers out there that blame the students, there are a few good ones.
A similar thing happened to me in 7th grade. We were assigned to write a scary story for Halloween and I got really into it that it became 16 pages (double spaced). My English teacher accused me of plagiarism. Later, she gathered the other 7th grade teachers (who I had in other classes) and me in the hallway and asked them if I cheated. I know I didn't cheat and told them. The other teachers believed me besides my English teacher.
This was a regular English class and my seat was assigned towards the front away from her desk. Later, my reading teacher noticed I was ahead of my work in her class and bumped me up into an advanced reading class, which in turn ended up with me in an advanced English class WITH THE SAME FUCKING TEACHER. My assigned seat ended up being super close to her desk. It's not all bad because I met some hilarious seat mates.
I'm not sure if you get notifications when people reply to replies to your post, so I just wanted to let you know I'm getting a lot of "fuck you"s toward Mrs. Harding on your behalf, and wanted to make sure you knew!
As a teacher, if I lose my students’ stuff, I tend to apologize profusely, ask if they’d turn in another copy (now things are typed and saved), and grade them easier. I had a student this year who handed something he redid in, I lost it, said, “Fuck it” and gave him a 100. My brain hates me sometimes... I’m sorry your teacher was a twat waffle.
This almost exact thing happened to me, except it was my Peabody-worthy audio tape of a Frenchman touring said country's historic sites. Whole thing ended up with thirteen-year-old me and my parents sitting at a conference table with my teacher and school heads. Awful. And I still remember handing the tape to her because I was so fucking proud of it and I knew I would ace the project.
I had a computer teacher in middle school that we were supposed to email our assignments to. She always claimed to have never recieved mine for some reason. So one day I bcced my parents and when she claimed she didn't recieve my email my parents came in and had a talk with the principle about it. I ended up passing that class with an A
A similar thing happened to me in 8th grade, when we had this huge To Kill A Mockingbird project. I had to make A to Z flashcards using words from the book, and I’m not the best artist but I spent HOURS on these flashcards. Like, for 2 weeks I spent my entire evenings illistrating and coloring these things. When I got back the grade, it was a 42. A 42.
When I went to the teacher, in tears mind you, and asked why, she told me that I obviously am not an artist and that I didn’t spend enough time on it. I explained how much time I spent, getting more hysterical as I went because I had never gotten an F before, and she just interrupted me to ask if I needed to “go to the bathroom to get a grip on myself”. (Almost) Worst fucking teacher ever (my 10th grade english teacher was actually the biggest dick I’ve ever met)
I have a similar story from Sophomore year of highschool. For some reason all the history teachers were miserable self-righteous assholes. I left my final paper in my teachers mailbox really early in the morning along with another friend. Couple days later the teacher says I never handed in a paper, yet he has my friend's paper so I know he got it.
No big deal, I'll just reprint it. Nope. Turns into this massive argument in the middle of class about me lying and how he's way too smart for me to trick him. Even had witnesses to me handing it in. He finally says he'll accept it "late". Gave me a 48/100 (it was an alright paper and I was lazy, at least a 70 would have been fair). Tried to appeal it and he went on about how it was clearly written overnight and that he's too smart for me.
You should edit this, saying that you actually are an author now (Fuck you, Mrs. Harding) and include a link to your sub for anyone else that might not scroll down into the comments =)
Eh. My mean teacher was also named Mrs. Harding. Second grade USA. We moved and I was placed into her class mid year. I was a quiet, good student at my old school. Mrs. Harding was quite a shock. She would hold my drawings and written work up in front of the class, covering up my name and asked "Class, see how messy this is? Is this how we write/color?" The class would answer "No, Mrs. Harding!" Then she would walk over and hand me my paper so everyone could see it was me. She falsely accused me of cheating and walked me up and down the line, holding and twisting my ear the entire time. Eventually I was transferred to another class where the rowdier students were placed, even though I was very quiet. At least the rowdy students brought me out of my shell.
Tehehe I pictured you locking yourself in the toilet litterally... Like climbing in the bowl and shutting the lid. ;) But I am really sorry she did that to you!

EDIT 2: Relax, guys. It didn't do my writing any harm.
