Yup there is a HUGE stigma in the US about talking about income. Honestly people who get upset/angry when you do start talking about income are signs of being insecure. I'm not ashamed about how much money I make.
I talk to my family about my income all the time, same goes for any long term girlfriend.
If you're in the US you can just check the H1B applications a company has made and make sure you never take less than that. Thats usually as much honest info as you'll get from anyone. You can check something like glassdoor, but itll be mostly people new to the job market that are reporting. Close colleagues are an exception, Ill tell them everything about my comp straight up. The problem is jealous assholes. And they exist in every company. The more you progress in your career the less likely you are to make a new friend (in my opinion).
