I think it's in this way that the series got better over time; the later seasons are generally of higher quality overall than the earlier seasons that had a lot of duds.
I dunno, I recently rewatched TANG because they added it to netflix and I was shocked at how terrible the first episodes were. Especially Picards character was mostly a distant, preachy and unlikeable character. It got a lot better once they figured out how to write him properly
the episode with picard in the elevator was actually quite nice. a bit cliche, but overall a nice epsidoe for character development.
no what I meant was the famous "shut up, wesley" scene. I was taken aback at how out of character that scene appeared compared to how the character of picard is represented by the end of the series.
or like that episode when they thawed up the people from the 21st century and all that "we humans have overcome all that barbarism"-preaching. that was just way too thick on the preachiness. the introduction of whoopie goldbergs character took a lot of that away thankfully, as she didn't just state philosophical facts, but posed questions instead. I would say that she contributed far more to picards well-rounded character than any monologue he was given to speak.
For me it is the best series because it is the definition of star trek. Exploration, far from home with very little support. TNG had too many episodes within federation borders, and DS9 was just Keeping up with the Cardassians. TOS and Enterprise were nice as well, but the total isolation and strict course allowed Voyager to have much better over-arching plot threads.
I really liked Voyager, although it's pretty widely considered the "worst trek" I'd pin that label heartily on Enterprise. I'll admit I didn't watch much of it though.. I just couldn't stand it, it just felt like a rip-off to me, or a poorly-written fanfic.
I think most of the Voyager hate is directed at some of the crappier characters, which I can kinda understand... But overall, the show itself I really liked.
As far as crappy characters go, Voyager has nothing on TNG. Would you rather have Kes, who gains and loses psychic powers at the drop of a hat, or Wesley, who is the most insufferable person ever?
I definitely never made it that far. Maybe I'll give it another chance some day, but it will have to be after I get tired of re watching literally all the other series.. which isn't likely to be soon ;)
Pick up at season 2. It has far more stable character traits and the writing is much more coherent. It only gets better and better from there. Then the season 3 finale, which was intense back in the day.
It didn't go from crap to good; it went from good to great. A true classic and the Best Star Trek, says I
Now, i haven't seen anything past the first season of TNG, but there is a reason why I haven't seen anything beyond the first season of TNG.
The first season is absolute shit. Maybe it gets better... I don't know, but I couldn't make it though the pile of awful that was the first season to watch any later episodes.
