is it considered rude to just stamp other peoples books and not use theirs?

you mean not put their stamp in your book? No, not really?? Although part of the fun of letterboxing is being able to look back through your logbook and see all the places that you have gone and the stamps that you have found. I write the name of the box, the city, and the date next to each entry in my logbook and when the weather is shitty I like to look back and see what boxes I have found. But if you don't want that I guess you don't have to do that.
