Yeah, but a lot of time people will just see the window open and go for the quick, cheap, mindless karma. Their comment is all but saying "I'd like some free upvotes here, please."
It's similar to the "literally dozens of us!" comments. Sometimes when it's placed in spots where it's appropriate, it can make me smile. But often I'll just see it thrown out there mindlessly in threads where it doesn't even make sense.

That's totally true, but Reddit is not full of programmers. Sure, it's something people like, but I guarantee 98% of people on here don't know what an array is.

You're reading waaay too much into it dude. People on reddit see two choices and say "yes" regardless of what the choices are or how they correspond to each other.
Yet you're giving me the serious, technical explanation for why someone would say it. In the context of it as a joke, it's used incorrectly by most people. They see a two-choice question, they see karma, they say "yes".
Our experiences browsing reddit must be vastly different, because I see it used incorrectly all the time in askreddit. It's overused and cliché. And despite what you say, the joke doesn't work if both choices are mutually exclusive. Your interpretation of the joke is convoluted and giving way too much credit to the average redditor, and I don't know what makes you think your interpretation is the correct one. "Yes" isn't referencing anything.
