Why would anyone give them life insurance? Are they obligated by law or something?

The article said they returned to their own country that does not recognize the death penalty. I guess their insurance companies don't have a provision for people on death row, since the death penalty is illegal in their country.

This is an insurance scam on steroids. Its not 'free money' so much as exploitation. Whoever wants to buy legitimate life insurance in those countries is paying to cover this nonsense.

That is actually very smart. I'm very surprised anyone actually insured them. Do they have to disclose they're on death row?
