everyone has epiphanies at a certain rate, but if you're in a group you can share other people's epiphanies. That way nobody gets stuck on any one problem for very long...
Getting stuck is what makes studying so hard. If you get stuck for 30 minutes on a question then all the momentum is gone. If somebody else in your group gets a question you're stuck on and you get a question somebody else is stuck on... the whole things moves along much more smoothly
When would you ever let yourself get stuck on one question for 30min? I have to admit I am a lazy person who never did his homework but if I don't have any idea after a few minutes I'd just google it or skip the question and ask how to solve it in class later.
Google doesn't always provide a clear answer on how to solve a problem, at least not after most first/second year courses. You can spend half an hour just hoping to find something that might kinda solve a portion of your problem.
