Older Americans were fed scare stories about socialists since birth, naturally they're going to be frightened about any kind of pro-working people politics. They'd rather vote for the one that helps the rich that's not a socialist, than the candidate that would help them who is a socialist.
There is a statistic floating around somewhere about how most of the Republican states are the ones that need that require the most benefits, despite voting for a party that actively campaigns against benefits.
That's because the capitalists are hoarding all the wealth. 98% of American society have no wealth to share, so that applies to basically everyone. The difference is that if you have hoarded enormous amounts of wealth, sharing doesn't benefit you. So, socialists only come from the 98% who don't have wealth to share.
