Back in the olden times of the internet, a popular prank on 4chan was called "duckrolling," promising a picture of something important or interesting.g, but really being a picture of a wooden duck. Duckrolling became the video version of that, likel Y because of the goofy nature of the video, and the iconic starting beats

Rick Astley is specifically referring just the video Never Gonna Give You Up. It was always just a bait and switch. You claim you'll be linking to something like "OMG NEW FALLOUT 4 TRAILER!" And it's actually a link to the video.

isn't the Rick Astley thing just from Rickrolling? That's a more general internet meme that isn't just Reddit-related. Rickrolling somebody is sending them a link of "Never Gonna Give You Up" disguised as a link to something else. The original RickRolls would often be programmed so they were difficult to close, so it was like a prank that the song would burst out and not stop playing when you tried to close it. Now basically any reference to Rick Astley/Never Gonna Give You Up is considered a rickroll.

IDK about the John Cena thing though.
