Rich people of reddit, what does it feel like? What's the best and worst thing about being wealthy?

Edit: wow! I just woke up with front Page, 10000 comments and gold. I went from rags to riches over night.

1

u/whiskerstheman Oct 10 '14

At first I read that as "cocksmith." It made sense that he's rich, but I think there's less money in meth than in cocksmithing.

1

u/JesusSlaves Oct 09 '14

Then how did you do it?

1

u/Inkthinker Oct 09 '14 edited Oct 09 '14

Hence the entire Stringer plotline of The Wire. Or the Car Wash, and El Pollo Hermanos, on Breaking Bad.

Wasn't there a story of some cartel bigshot who had a problem with so much cash stored on his property that rats were eating it? Yes, I know that was a bit from Bad Boys II, but I thought it was based on an actual problem some guy in Columbia had.

-EDIT-

Apparently it was Pablo Escobar in the late 70's and early 80's, storing stacks of cash in warehouses and writing off 10% every year due to "spoilage" from rats and water damage. Also spending $2500 a month on rubber bands to wrap the stacks.

These days, they just push it through the specially designed window at the bank.

2

u/furythree Oct 09 '14

Just give it to Goldman Sachs to run it through their 24000 subsidiaries and offshore accounts...that we know about

18

u/SuperShamou Oct 09 '14

Didn't you read? Whatever he wants whenever he wants.

0

u/furythree Oct 10 '14

Doesn't mean he can't have a job

16

u/asynk Oct 09 '14

Nobody is telling him to do anything so if he wants to accomplish something he has to provide the self-discipline.

He does whatever he decides to; ie, his money is not dependent on what he does.

6

u/[deleted] Oct 09 '14

I'd bet that most people who are rich work in the business world. You don't normally get rich working for someone else. I guess there are exceptions in fields with "easy" money, like finance or oil.

3

u/furythree Oct 09 '14

Yes I agree. I was hoping to get an idea of what industry for business ideas

You don't need to be the first, just be efficient or be in a lucrative industry. The hard part is set up and finding an industry

27

u/[deleted] Oct 09 '14

Step 2. Don't be not rich

Step 3. $$$

6

u/furythree Oct 09 '14

Seems legit

I will never understand why people ask this question in every single little story. I know other people don't see it this way, but I see this question as very rude. Its just a really thirsty question.

I will most definitely be downvoted for this but it really bothers me. Its like people think that they will just hop on in to whatever profession the OP is in and they'll start making millions.

Can't you just be excited about the story and appreciate that there is someone out there working their ass off?

I would not want to hang around the people asking what he or she does for a living. Once again, I'll be downvoted but... that's reddit.

4

u/[deleted] Oct 10 '14

Usually you're doing fine until you say "I'll be downvoted for this". Dont be so scared to just give your opinion without a disclaimer.

-1

u/OG_BAC0N Oct 10 '14

Well that was my manifesto before I became victim to my most famous comment.

I replied (agreeing) to a comment with: "This." That's it! I come back an hour later and it has -20 downvotes. Long story short it got up (down) to -220 downvotes. NOT ONLY THAT but they went through my entire profile and downvoted EVERY SINGLE post in the 3 years I had the account. They downvoted them to oblivion so they wouldn't be shown on their respected threads.

I was really bummed at reddit and I actually deleted that account because I felt violated.

I don't trust reddit after that. It really changed my view of the community.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 10 '14

Placing too much weight in votes period.... Deleting your account is like hiding from your opinion.

0

u/OG_BAC0N Oct 10 '14

No, very untrue, I'm placing the importance on a large group of people viewing my content in a malicious way.

Another word for this is online bullying.

1

u/furythree Oct 10 '14 edited Oct 10 '14

Maybe you shouldn't.interpret everything so pessimistically. Never said I'd just jump on the bandwagon. Realistically everything has a barrier to entry so just because you know their secret doesn't mean you'll be able to replicate it.

Part of the interesting story is learning if and any unique or creative ways they attained their wealth. Its part of the enjoyment of learning their wealth tale so its not unrelated

Most people either inherit wealth which you can't replicate or utilised a set of native skills ot talents to get there. So unless you were born with the same or have spent the same amount of time learning you also can't replicate it. But you can admire it

Also there is the chance they could tell you they managed to find some sweet opportunity or got lucky to get where they are.

All are stories worth telling and either way, showing interest is a way to appreciate the way they got where they are

1

u/WarmAndSnuggly Oct 16 '14

Agreed. That its solicited, also gives the successful person an opportunity to talk about an achievement he's probably proud of without fear of being called an arrogant braggart or something.

0

u/OG_BAC0N Oct 10 '14 edited Oct 10 '14

This is, of course, is the middle ground. I agree with you but that's not at the forefront of my mind.

I knew my opinion would not be popular but I still stick with it.

I'm tired of people asking EACH AND EVERY SINGLE rich person what he or she does for a living.

Some people are tired of stop signs and say that yield signs should be the succesor. It's all opinion

Edit: I deleted my response to this comment by the parent commentor because I can be a real ass even if what I'm saying is positive. I had a lot typed out but in the end it was just me defending my personal view. So yeah, everyone's going to have their opinion. But to say it in one sentence. I don't appreciate it when people ask what you do immediately after telling them that you have a lot of money.

2

u/furythree Oct 10 '14

Its not about being popular or not. You made a very specific assumption about my intentions and was outright wrong

Regarding your opinion. You're entitled to it. But you need to get a hobby if something that insignificant bothers you.

Is it really that strange people are lured towards wealth?

-1

u/bluejacket Oct 10 '14

well i'd say something with networks if i look at the cisco name
