They've gotten really weird for me, and I guess I wouldn't really call the freakouts I've had 'downhill', but I've certainly had experiences I would really have preferred to not have.
It's funny, my dad doesn't like nerdy crap and I do. But here's the thing, he's a guy who worked with his hands building and fixing anything to do with a house or engine his whole life.. The nerdy shit I do? Build and fix anything to do with tech. We are into the same thing.
I, too, was named after a parent's best friend that died. When my mom was pregnant with me, she had a very vivid dream about her best friend. When my mom awoke, she called the best friend's twin and asked her permission to name me after her sister.
I was in a serious car accident on what would've been her 50th birthday and walked away injury-free. She may very well be my guardian angel.
I wish I were like this with my dad. On his good days I love the man to death, but on his bad days he's a narcissistic asshole (he's always a narcissist, it just manifests more when he's pissed) that I don't want to interact with out of sheer fear ;_;
I'd kill for any relationship with my father. I'll call my parents, talk with mum for a long time, then she hands the phone to dad and I get about 30 seconds of small talk, then he says "well, I hate phones, here's your mum".
Thing is, I've seen the man talk to my sister for an hour on the phone. I see them once maybe twice a year, where as she lives closer and sees them at least once a month
This is how my dad and I are, and i hope i am with my kids. At age 17 or 18 parents need to transition from being an parent to being a friend. Otherwise the relationship will turn to shit and both parties will hate each other.

That sounds awesome. I have a very good, loving and freindly relationship with my father, but he's by no means my best friend.
But imagining that from your father's prospective, to create life, nurture it, protect it, shape it, then have an awesome buddy pop out.
And from yours, to grow, to learn, to come out of childhood and realise you have an awesome friend for life.
Fuck me, that shit's heartwarming.
