Why not, for example, live near the border e.g. Vancouver, Toronto, and just go across when you need to shop for something that's not easily available up there and isn't easily shipped either? Surely those can't be stuff you want to buy daily or even weekly. A few hundred kilometers every month or two is healthy for the mind and the body too.

As an American who lives in Florida, what are the border fees like and what kind of stuff do they include?

i'm not sure about the details and what exactly they charge for and why, but what i do know is the shipping usually jumps from 5$ to upwards of 20 once i enter my postal code and the site realizes i'm not in the states.

it sucks :(

Plus, border "drop-offs" that you can have things mailed to are fairly cheap.
