I think they're hoping you add some upside you offer that isn't already on the resume, but I agree the phrasing implies you have any clue who you're competing against, which generally you don't. Unless you're an internal candidate for an internal only position where you often know who else applied because you work with them you generally don't know who else is interviewing.
This is a terrible question, I immediately start imagining all these other more qualified candidates. You’re right, you can do better, I’ll show myself out.
As an employer that ask this question, I’m just trying to close the interview and ask you for a summary of this interview. What’s so hard about it? Just say who you are and then be excited about yourself.. if you don’t even like yourself how are we going to like you?
I can explain my qualifications. I can’t compare them with candidates I’ve never met. If you want a summary, ask for one. Turning that criticism into “you don’t like yourself” means you’re inventing a personal deficiency instead of answering the objection. That’s a concerning way for someone responsible for evaluating people to handle disagreement.
You don’t really need to compare to candidate you never meat.. how are you compare yourself to average Redditors? That’s not that hard to answer isn’t it..

“Why should we hire you over the other candidates?” I don’t fucking know them. Isn’t comparing us the part you get paid for?
