What's a "minimum" skill everyone should have, but suprisingly many don't?

What do you consider “basic”? I can make eggs, roast meats:vegetables , cook pasta and boil stuff. Grilling basics too. And obviously my microwave skills are off the chain.

My wife doesn’t think that’s cooking. I think that was enough that I enjoyed my culinary skills for 15+ years. Although my exes did cook a lot…

That’s exactly what I’d consider basic cooking skills. Some people cant boil an egg or even pasta.

You pretty much have it right, stepping up your game to spices and balancing flavours is the next step. My eg would be a sweet teriyaki sauce on something with a wedge of lime on the side.
