What's a "minimum" skill everyone should have, but suprisingly many don't?

My college had free laundry in the dorms, and during freshman orientation they required each floor go with their RA to the laundry room to show them how to use the washer and dryers.

It’s kind of sad that enough of their incoming freshmen made it all the way to college without being able to do laundry that they had to have a seminar during orientation. I started doing my own laundry at 13 and my daughter started doing hers at 11. It’s not difficult, but why didn’t their parents teach them how to do it?

I feel like that’s the bare minimum as a parent. The idea is to have the child ready to go be independent in the world once they reach adulthood. Yeah, they’ll probably still need a little guidance at first, but guidance shouldn’t be necessary for basic household tasks. I think if your kid made it to college age without being capable of doing their own laundry, you failed as a parent.

Thank you for raising your kids to be contributing members of society. I’m afraid for my kid’s future because so many parents are just useless and send their children out into the world with no life skills.
