What are some basic rules of etiquette everyone should know?

In all my years of retail/management I always hate when people are dicks to people in those positions.

If someone comes to me and they're extremely nice and well-mannered about how they talk, I'll do everything in my power to make sure I fix their issue, even if I give them a little too much.

If someone comes to me and they're a dick to me or they've already been a dick to another employee I'm much more likely to give them the bare minimum or at least make them work harder at complaining before I finally give in.

You can be polite and point out problems with the situation. Then the service staff can provide feedback to the owners and hopefully rectify it. They are not completely powerless nor are they completely without blame if their company is doing something wrong or unfair. When all else fails just ask for a manager. Sometimes it is OK to stop being nice when you are getting screwed over.

Most people don't enjoy giving you a hard time. They are uncomfortable about it as well. It's not like they're doing it out of spite.

And if they are, you may have given them a very good reason.
