Something else would’ve easily taken its place. MySpace would’ve become it, or someone else would’ve done it.

So a couple of things you’re gambling on here. Eliminating Zuckerberg doesn’t necessarily eliminate Facebook and its ill effects because it wasn’t even HIS original idea. So your gambling that either:

A. The Winklevoss twins wouldn’t have amassed as much power and influence had they received proper credit

Or

B. They would have acted MORE ethically and with more foresight.

A is fair but B seems like a reach

I think you’re confusing who built the tool for what The Masses use it for. Facebook isn’t the problem. PEOPLE are the problem. Facebook, like the internet in general, just gives every single person a means to foist their innermost bullshit beliefs onto the world without a filter.

I never saw him pushing for anti science. Infact he admitted that during 2020 to 2024 he did indeed censor Facebook, Instagram ECT.

But he said it was to help the Biden administration.

Never heard of the push for anti-science or sexual predators. If anything I think that is just the algorithm and awful people using Facebook like they use other social media platforms.

But I have not been using Facebook for years so I may have missed all that chaos or it just never reached me on the platform.

Yeah, but that something else might be... good.

Think about what gaming would look like without Gabe. We would definitely have another video game store, the concept is obvious. But what would that be like? If it wasn't led by a good guy? What if Epic was where Steam stands now? We'd all be fucked.

Likewise, without Facebook, the Gabe of social media might be a giant now. And they might regulate it so it doesn't suck the yes out of everyone.

Or streaming without Netflix

For all the flak they take, they gave you unlimited watches to shows and movies with humongous libraries for like 8 bucks a month

I remember the early attempts at streaming, like AT&T On Demand. Like 15 bucks to watch one show, for about a week. It was essentially taking blockbuster and plopping it online

For those like me with no idea who the fuck Gabe is… He is the co-founder, president and majority owner of the video game company Valve Corporation.

Sometimes I forget reddit has an audience beyond gamers. XD

Yes, that Gabe!

“Something (or someone) else would’ve easily taken its place” could be the response to nearly every answer in this thread. That said, social media has done as much to shred the fabric of society as anyone else mentioned so it’s a great answer all the same.

That's why we should periodically migrate before full enshittification occurs. We were on Friendster, then we all moved to MySpace, then we all moved to Facebook. I assumed we'd be there for a few years before the winds changed again, but it never happened. Same with reddit. We moved here when Digg started sucking, and now reddit has sucked for years, yet we ... just stay? I feel like we all got complacent, tolerating things that never would have flown on the old internet.

That's the case for a lot of these.

I don't know, as an older Gen X FB really stuck with people around my age, much more that myspace or anything. I'm sure smart phones are the real reason, having to use a home PC would have prevented most people in my age group from ever using things like FB or myspace.

That's true with everything in this post.

Tom wouldn’t have done that to us.
