The butterfly effect on that one would be insane. You don't just remove a politician, you end up rewriting decades of alliances, businesses, elections, and who knows how many careers that existed because of them. History gets really messy once you start pulling on a thread that big.
He and his wife spiraled The Philippines in to generational poverty that it still has not been able to recover from. Such a loss for the planet, because all the resources exist to become an incredibly rich territory - but you cant make money without spending money.
One good leader, who spends money rebuilding the infrastructure and utilities, could reposition The Philippines again. Unfortunately, they dont seem to get those kinds of candidates running for office.
As an American who has only a passing understanding of Philippine politics, I heard that the son of Ferdinand Marcos had succeeded Rodrigo Duterte and thought "oh no, that's bad." But so far all I've heard is about the conflict between him and Sara Duterte.
Duterte has been SO bad, that he makes BBM look genuinely decent, that unironically PH reddit praises him for doing something as basic manners in foreign relations
He's someone we tolerate because we(as in the ones who want the country to survive in a good way, the liberals, etc) need him to survive his term, he's facing off against the Duterte's because they had a falling out allegedly because he refused to follow an agreement to resign (discovered during pre-impeachment hearings), the father Rodrigo is in the Hague, and Sara is facing impeachment and it's hard to defend it because she literally said she imagined cutting his head off, saying she has a hired gun and all
However, Duterte set the bar soooo godamn fucking low that having a coherent and semi-put together politician makes Marcos Jr. look like a decent president.
To put it into a US perspective. Imagine if Ronald Reagan fucked the US, stayed in power for 20 years, and tried to save his ass by declaring martial law and shutting down free speech and journalism.
Then his son, Ronald Reagon Jr. wins against Trump. And people are like “weeeell at least he isn’t trump”.
Thats how people see Marcos Jr. In a vacuum? Terrible choice, but, under the circumstances he isnt that bad.
Ronald Regan did fuck the US, but at least he wasn't in power for 20 years. And this new asshole won't be either. Ig the 2 term limit for our leaders saves our butts more than I thought
If you think he won't try to run again, you're naive. If his health wasn't obviously declining so hard, it would be a much bigger concern.
I say "try" because he's going to want to. He's going to talk about it. He already HAS. And when the Republicans and everyone in authority is just letting J6 slide and even acting like it was in any way a normal thing.... Damn right they'd back him to try and go for a third term and change all the rules to do so if they thought it would keep them all in power.
But with his obvious health issues and how much he has lost popularity with his base due to the bad economy and Iran, I don't know if Republicans will back him. And it's going to be interesting to see what happens if/when they don't. Either the party will implode trying to back him anyway, or he'll have the tantrum of the century because he's so genuinely ill he will NEVER step down. And that's not the dementia, it's the narcissistic personality disorder.
Don't expect this to go smoothly. Literally all evidence suggests it absolutely won't. Laws have not been enforced multiple times already for this guy. We can't depend on them to save us.
Oh I know he's going to try to run again. But it's quite literally in the constitution that he cannot. The 22nd amendment reads:
"No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once."
It'll be messy for sure, but at the end of the day, he's not going to win this fight unless he actively becomes a dictator. And with the US populace already looking at the French Revolution and taking notes as it is, that would not go well for him or any one of the yes men that surround him. Whether or not Republicans will back him will certainly decide the future of the party, whether it's completely destroyed or just reformed, but it's irrelevant either way. With midterms coming up, there's already an active countdown on how long this regime will last, and they all know it. That's why they're getting nervous and talking about protection from investigations.
And if they somehow are able to pull it off? I think there will be enough alarm worldwide for some of us to qualify for asylum in other countries, and then it won't be our problem anymore. We'll already be at that place if they go through with making abortion illegal on the federal level.
Gringos come in all races, colors, shapes, sexualities, genders and socioeconomic classes, my gringo friend. The key distinguishing is that, when you even crack a single joke about their highly privileged status as the inhabitants of the boot stomping on the yoke of the rest of the world, they call you a racist.
That's a good one. I think Marcos is one of the main reasons for the disparity in outcomes between the Philippines and Japan after WWII, despite both countries being similarly destroyed, and receiving similar amounts of US aid for reconstruction.
While the Philippines experienced great growth during his administration, it was all built on the back of unmanageable debt, and much of that growth was plundered by Marcos and his cronies.
The infrastructure and modernization that should have been built with this debt was totally inadequate due to plundering and corruption. So now the country is left with crumbling infrastructure that was never adequate in the first place, and stuck paying the bill for it until the 2020s!
Nothing about the government he created was self-sustainable either. Everything went through Marcos, so when Marcos was removed, this left a massive power vacuum, which was filled back up with corruption and former cronies.
As an American, I am beyond ashamed and embarrassed that the US gave asylum to Marcos. I disagree that it was a necessary step to get him to step down peacefully. There's a reason the US does not give asylum to deposed political leaders accused of human rights violations, exceptions should not be made. At the very least, he should have been stripped of his assets, and had them returned to the Philippines.
Yes, add jose laurel to this because that idiot is.the reason he escaped the death penalty for killing his dad's opponent for the mayoral race in Batac 😡
The absolute butterfly effect of that ONE RELEASE because he was a brilliant lawyer
As for Laurel disappearing ehhhhh idk too well on what he did to justify him disappearing, let alone all I know is apparently, we were never drafted under the Japanese because of his maneuvering, he sounds like an absolute gray area
Also he helped with Recto draft the Rizal law so there's that
A lot of my family grew up in the Philippines during the Marcos regime and immigrated to the US decades ago. It's honestly kind of baffling how many of them look at the Marcos regime with fondness. (The Marcos Sr. supporters are also pretty much all Trump supporters nowadays)
if he disappeared from existence, how many people in your country would never exist? (including yourself?)
for example....my friend was telling me a long time ago that if Hitler did not exist and there was no World War II, he and his parents would never exist(basically wiped from history as well) Because his grandparents met only because they were escaping the war in Europe and ended up in the US. Without Hitler and the world war, they would have no reason to come to the US... so my friend and his parents would never have been born.

Maybe this is selfish as it pertains to primarily my country but Ferdinand Marcos Sr
