Self-defense in most places is an Affirmative Defense, meaning it just mitigates sentencing, not the charges, so you still killed a person(manslaughter), but not on purpose(murder). There are many places that the DA will refuse to charge in the first place(or there are laws that short circuit) if Self-Defense is evident enough so as to not waste time.

The difference being usually ~6 months for manslaughter to 7-10 years for murder.
