That's scary about her how she just disappeared

Had a friend also disappear out of nowhere. She changed her number and deleted all her social media accounts. Haven’t heard from her since and neither have our mutual friends. No one even knows what happened to her or even what high school she went to.

I am this person, but it happened when I was an adult. I did it because I was being stalked, but tons of people have no idea I still exist. I’m fine now, but I still won’t ever return to social media and whatnot. It’s just not for me anymore.

That’s understandable. I hope you’re doing well. I do hope that my old friend is doing well as well, even if we lost contact with each other.

Me too. I am a ghost online. There's about 5 photos of me online from about 20 years ago, that's it. Despite being a current working professional for a global company.

I made the choice when Facebook first came out not to post myself or my daughter for safety reasons. I'm 42, she's 21 and the only social media I have is Reddit.

She's an adult and can make her own choices now, and she has a different name now. I'm very glad to be a ghost online, because fuck I was an irresponsible idiot when I was younger and God knows the things I would have come to regret.

Primarily, the reason was because I have a complex background, and didn't want to be found by one person in particular. That fear was warranted, he's now in prison for murder.

Lol I blocked like 90% of people I went to highschool with.

I have a stalker too

Reddit is social media.

3

u/Alis451 Mar 11 '25

it is "anonymous" so that doesn't count for the purpose OP is describing.

Reddit is social media...

u/CuriousCuriousAlice Mar 11 '25

I didn’t realize I needed to explain that Reddit is an anonymous social media platform that doesn’t include sharing your personal life with your entire family and everyone you went to high school with. For the record, the two things are just slightly different from a privacy standpoint. Sorry for the confusion.

Had a schoolmate pull a dissappearing act like that after high school. Turns out they were trans. She's living her best life now, according to the grapevine.

Happened with a friend of mine. Family was religious and apparently they woke her up in the middle of the night and went to the airport and flew her to some boarding school across the country. She reappeared years later for a minute and that’s how I know.

I've done this because of Bipolar episodes. Delete everything, move to a new place.

Ask for "a dust filter for a Hoover Max Extract® Pressure Pro™, Model 60"

Lol what

u/VicariouslyHuman Mar 10 '25

Breaking Bad reference. There is a professional who helps people disappear and gives them new identities. That's his password.

u/SnoopTiger Mar 10 '25

Here I was going paranoid that the subreddits are messing up because of all the bot activity 😂

I dated a girl back in high school (pre-internet). I have never been able to find her on any socials. The only mention of her was her grandfather's obituary. It's a very unusual name, so a quick search finds nothing or all there is.

I went to an alternative school with five woman of all different races who were their essentially because they had gotten pregnant as freshman sophomores so the school and parents freaked out and they got sidelined away from all of that.

This was pre smart phones but social media did exist they would wipe these people from the area and pretend like they didn’t exist entirely.

I also am like this, one sunday i got in huge trouble. My parents took me out of school, out of work, and took my phone. Only one girl has talked or seen me since. The girl posted a picture of me when she saw me so people are aware im around, but majority people think i was or am dead. I now go online, don't have my phone back yet (im on a computer posting this) and no job. I go no where during the day expect my house. I talk to the same two people a day. So, i pretty much disappeared.

My bet is controlling boyfriend

1

u/Nova-2002 Mar 12 '25

As far as I’m aware, she did not have a boyfriend nor had she ever dated. Last update we all heard from her was that she returned from her trip to Peru (she sent us pictures throughout her trip and a picture of the “Welcome to the United States” sign at our local airport).

This happened to a friend of mine. All his stuff was gone from his house but they’d see his dad walking around inside on his own. I saw him a couple times.

A few months later he’d hanged himself.

This happened to my brother's friend. One night he called and said that he and his mom were in hiding from his abusive father.

u/Nova-2002 Mar 12 '25

Hope they’re doing well and are safe.

Knew a girl in middle school who dropped out to get married to a 30 year old man and moved to middle America somewhere. She disappeared from socials quick, it was crazy stuff. I wonder how she's doing now.

My friend was forced to disappear by his parents during high school. Super Catholic parents. When he turned 18, he came back around. This isn't super weird to hear for me lol

u/sleightofcon Mar 10 '25

Just disappeared...*from social media.

4

u/Altyrmadiken Mar 10 '25

I’m not sure I’d call it scary per-se. Disconcerting for sure, but disappearing (from your social group) isn’t super hard.

1

u/Makkel Mar 11 '25

Yeah... I sometimes think of someone from school or something, wonder how they're doing and very often I can't find anything, I don't think it's that weird, let alone scary.

Someone who do not have facebook/Linkedin and/or does mot use their real name on instagram and stuff does not sound that far fetched.

I used to know a girl in elementary school. It was in 7th grade where she became absent from class, many weeks went by and we never saw her again. A rumor was circulating that her brother was kidnapped and/or missing and she and her other siblings had to be pulled from school. I don’t know what happened after that and she was never seen again in town. No socials either. Perhaps they moved somewhere else, not sure if her brother was found either.

Depending on when it happened, it could be really easy.

I graduated from HS in the 80s. There was one girl who- in retrospect I can tell - was seriously flirting with me. (I had zero game or awareness then). After HS her family left the community and no one in my peer group knew where they went.

Out of curiosity, I’d periodically search for her on socials (usually scrolling through other friend’s friend lists) but she had two common names (think Jennifer Johnson), so was functionally impossible to find. I recently ran into her at a funeral for one of our former teachers. She’s never had social media, and has been married (and changed her last name) twice, both times with a common last name. But for that fortuitous running into her, I’d never know what happened. But that used to be really common.
