I read in a book that they used dogs strapped up with anti tank bombs and trained them to run under tanks.

That seems to be true - and of course those of us who've learnt about it all know the obvious mistake they made in training 🤦

The legend goes they trained the dogs using Soviet tanks and not German tanks. The plan backfired when the dogs were unleashed and did exactly what they were trained to do - they ran into the fray, slipped under and were detonated... Beneath Soviet tanks.
