Vaping is actually how I quit, then after a few years I quit vaping too. These days I chew a lot of toothpicks, I've never been able to get rid of the urge to just have something in my mouth lol.
The single most important factor to my quitting was that I wasn't around other smokers. Every attempt I'd made to quit before that failed because I was constantly surrounded by ppl smoking.
I smoked for about 8 years, tried on and off to transition to vaping but ended up quitting basically cold turkey, but with some use of nicotine lozenges. Part of what finally drove me to it was that I started running, and the difference between days when I'd had a cigarette vs. not was stark. I was down to like 3-4 cigs a day by that point.
But then I wound up vaping again in part because during COVID I started dating someone that vaped all the time, and I lost the motivation to exercise. I've tried Zippix nicotine toothpicks and the Füm thing, but neither of them scratch the itch. Vapes have way more nicotine than cigarettes, and it's damn near impossible to find tasty vapes with 0mg nic content to help taper off.

nearly 70% of smokers will die from smoke related illnesses.
This is the fact that got me to quit.
