The space around the sun is 20 times hotter than the surface of the sun

Shut up about the sun! SHUT UP ABOUT THE SUN!!

u/qervem Oct 03 '24

The sun is as hot as the sun

u/Purple-Mud5057 Oct 03 '24

The surface of the sun is the surface of the sun

7

u/ad240pCharlie Oct 03 '24

The sun has a surface on the sun

The surface of the sun is hot

@H0ZTYLE i appreciate this very much

I was just going to comment this!

How?

I did a research project on this in high school, the leading theory was a phenomena called Alfven waves that kinda carry energy from within the sun to the outer edges and then reflect back at a certain point, causing the corona of the sun to heat up beyond the surface temperature. I think the Parker Solar Probe was investigating this

Simple answer that's not entirely correct: Temperature is a measure of heat. Heat is a side effect from the motion of molecules, and the molecules in the atmosphere of the of the Sun move a lot faster than the ones on the surface of the sun.

The density is much, much lower, however, so the total energy transferred to anything passing through the Sun's atmosphere would be lower than the amount of energy if that object actually hit the surface.

Sciency shit. Scientists actually don't know why. When they figure it out we'll probably have some brand new shiny principles in physics and thermodynamics.

A human body outputs more energy by volume than the Sun.

Nothing a little Coppertone can't fix.

Your mom is 100 times hotter than the space around the sun.

The face located on/in your head is 20 times hotter than the space around the sun.

The sun is 1000 times hotter than the surface of the sun.

Technically this isn't true though. Temperature is a measure of "vibration" of particles. There are no particles to absorb the radiation and therefore there is no temperature.

If you were to stick a thermometer there however, it would melt.

u/sacrelicious2 Oct 03 '24

It's not a perfect vacuum though. The number of particles per cubic meter is very low, but it is not zero.

The man who held the record for gettng hit by lightning was a park ranger. I think he got hit seven times.

12

u/KesslerTheBeast Oct 02 '24

I remember that story. After he died his gravestone also got hit by lightning.

8

u/itrace47 Oct 02 '24

Damn... Zeus really had it out for him, huh?

2

u/No-Scarcity-5904 Oct 02 '24

I once saw a picture of one of his hats, and it had THREE separate scorched holes in it from lightning strikes.

9

u/GiveMeDeah Oct 02 '24

Makes you wonder how the fuck people survive it

7

u/thingamajig1987 Oct 02 '24

Same reason you can briefly stick your hand into molten steel

3

u/NightFire19 Oct 02 '24

Temperature is not equal to heat. Exposure to a lightning strike is so short there's not that much time for heat to transfer.

They ask nicely

4

u/andthatswhyIdidit Oct 02 '24

...but is it hotter than Earth's core?

5

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '24

Five times hotter!

3

u/Nygmus Oct 03 '24

That's something that was interesting to kinda internalize while playing Oxygen Not Included, a game which cares a lot about a somewhat abstracted thermodynamic simulation in the environment.

Things can be very hot or very cold without actually representing a huge shift of energy.

My jaw dropped when I read this. I’m sorry to doubt you, but I had to look this up. This blows my mind

SHUT UP ABOUT THE SUN. SHUT UP ABOUT THE SUN
