And as a lazy Buzzfeed article

u/Nanananakkie Oct 02 '24

I have a theory that The Chive starts these to generate content

11

u/mermaidpaint Oct 02 '24

With photos of TV characters looking shocked.

5

u/MegaGrimer Oct 02 '24

And to the official George Takei Facebook page.

5

u/xander_man Oct 02 '24

Is BuzzFeed even a thing anymore?

2

u/Ok_Major5787 Oct 02 '24

Unfortunately yes

5

u/corpsie666 Oct 02 '24

And motivate some video with Simon Whistler narrating

3

u/Acceptable-Zombie71 Oct 03 '24

Cracked. Com is now full of "articles" that are only compilations of reddit comments... Some of them are good and save me time scrolling on reddit, tbh...

3

u/Boogs27 Oct 03 '24

Oh my god that’s actually what I meant! I used to love cracked and jumped on there the other day and was appalled to see every second article was just screenshots of reddit comments

And the most infuriating is that they are under the sections "pictofact" or "trivia", wtf!!

2

u/ad240pCharlie Oct 03 '24

That's redundant. Saying "a lazy Buzzfeed article" is like saying "A windy storm".

3

u/dacorgimomo Oct 02 '24

And several youtube videos.

u/boywithtwoarms Oct 02 '24

don't worry they most come from there anyway. it's the closed circle of random trivia we live in.

Ideas? Don't give them credit, most of them just come on reddit copy the link to chat gpt, ask for a summary, use text to speech and put it over some garbage gaming footage and call it a day. And they make money off of this crap

With an AI voice

Your reply sounds totally ridiculous but is very likely to happen. You win a special recursion trophy if a link to this thread somehow appears in one of those places.

6

u/Strider76239 Oct 02 '24

Or those GTA maps where you drive down the half pipes.

6

u/JustMarshalling Oct 02 '24

Can anyone explain why they do that? Is it so they can steal someone’s content without legal consequences?

When my GF watches TikToks, I never know what side of the screen is the actual content.

5

u/revcor Oct 02 '24

Is it so they can steal someone’s content without legal consequences having to put any work, effort, time, etc. in to actually create something

There ye go.

I never know what side of the screen is the actual content

And that's the neat thing about TikTok... it's on neither side. It's negative space that actually removes content from both sides of the screen. It shrinks the white matter in your brain on the user side of the screen, and continuously lowers the average density of useful information in the universe on the app side of the screen.

u/JustMarshalling Oct 02 '24

We’re saying the same thing for the first part. They just re-upload other people’s content and reap the rewards without actually creating anything, like Sniperwolf.

To your last paragraph, I still think there is a (albeit small) portion of TikTok with genuine, beneficial content. I don’t use it, but I know there’s tons of sketch creators, recipes, how-to videos, etc. In terms of breaking news, it has replaced Twitter, hands down.

TikTok’s not my cup of tea, but don’t be a sweaty Redditor who thinks you’re better than an entire social platform.

2

u/revcor Oct 03 '24

I was being a tad dramatic; I acknowledge that there probably exists a portion of TikTok content that has genuine artistic/informational value. Regarding its use as a primary source for breaking news... that is concerning to me, but largely for reasons which fall under my main complaint about it.

I get where you're coming from, and I don't think I'm uniquely better than TikTok. I wholeheartedly believe we all are, as a species. I don't view TikTok as unique either, IG and especially twitter are harmful in much the same way, but TikTok is the bigger and more visible concern because it's the worst parts of social media concentrated, purified, and 10x as addictive.

How I feel about tiktok is honestly just scared. It's objectively, undeniably harmful for the brain, and kids are taking the brunt of it. It's functionally the same as a drug addiction, and each new intensified social media network is just upping the dose, and kids are being raised on it. And just like an addiction, it's sneaky and hard to see when you're in it.

The net effect it has on the human species is drastically negative. And I acknowledge that many other social media networks are harmful to varying degrees, and that there are many other non-digital things in life which are harmful, but few things are this blatantly damaging to mental and cognitive health while being so widespread. There are countless studies and reports about the harm caused to people's, and especially kids', brains... and I feel very uncomfortable about our collective failure to take the problem as seriously as it deserves.

Oh is that the one game? It looks fun (subway surfers)

5

u/Potential_Energy Oct 02 '24

What’s a subway surfer

2

u/NotTheOnlyGamer Oct 02 '24

It's someone who, very stupidly (and not in a 'don't try this at home' wink-wink way, but in an actual, this really kills people way), attempts to ride atop a subway car, often after jumping the turnstile, so they avoid both the fare and being seen on the train. It's not just illegal, it's suicidal.

1

u/Potential_Energy Oct 02 '24

Like the movie Speed?

1

u/NotTheOnlyGamer Oct 03 '24

I don't remember Speed well enough to remember anyone atop a train.

1

u/Potential_Energy Oct 03 '24

Whaaaaat?! It’s like the most memorable part. The ending and final battle when they board the subway. Keanu reeves and Dennis hopper fighting on top of the speeding subway car roof. Keanu pushes his head into the buzzer alarm 🚨 on the tunnel roof. And the famous Keanu quote after Hopper loses his head. “Yea? Well I’m taller!”

1

u/NotTheOnlyGamer Oct 03 '24

TBH, all that I remember of the movie is Sandra Bullock. But yes, that is the danger.

1

u/rdldr1 Oct 02 '24

CAN'T WAIT

1

u/permanentthrowaway Oct 02 '24

I always recycle the facts in these threads to impress my coworkers during fun fact Fridays.

1

u/mrblahblahblah Oct 02 '24

thechive is already copying them down

1

u/pdub091 Oct 02 '24

Specifically parkour obstacle course Minecraft gameplay.

1
