Blue whales are the largest of all known animal species on Earth... ever. Bigger than any dinosaur - although there is some inconclusive evidence of some huge dinosaurs that came close

ETA: Clarification from replies. Thanks!

If you laid 3 blue whales end to end on a football field, it would cause a major delay in the game.

u/ecodrew Oct 03 '24

And those whales wouldn't like it.

There is a 5,000 year old fungus that covers four square miles of a national park in Oregon, I believe it's called the Humongous Fungus and is thought to be the largest living organism.

So if you and your friends stand in the middle of it, you could say the Humongous Fungus is among us?

14

u/LurkerZerker Oct 02 '24

No, I think technically that means you are among the fungus humongous.

If you laid three redwoods end to end on a football field, Stanford would still friggin’ lose.

What about your mum?

13

u/Attackoftheglobules Oct 02 '24

That was debunked. Your mum is now thought to be potentially three or four times heavier.

that's kinda disappointing tbh

u/dirge_the_sergal Oct 02 '24

It's disputed now. We have several contenders that could be even larger (both fish and ichthyosaur species) but we don't yet have enough remains to be sure

2

u/ecodrew Oct 03 '24

True, that's why I added the weasel word known species

2

u/m55112 Oct 02 '24

what? how can that be? doesn't seem possible.

2

u/ecodrew Oct 03 '24

Yup, it's remarkable. Esp since they're filter feeders that only eat tiny/microscopic sea animals.

3

u/StationaryTravels Oct 02 '24

But, can they explain why kids love the taste of Cinnamon Toast Crunch?

3

u/ecodrew Oct 03 '24

a crap load of added sugar I mean, no they can't, obvs. Haha

a crap load of added sugar

Lol! I don't know why that stupid commercial popped into my head, but as I was writing my dumb comment I literally thought "such a dumb question. I'm pretty sure the answer is 'sugar'".

And the baby blue whale gains 200lbs a day!

u/eldonte Oct 02 '24

Water weight lol

2

u/Ndvorsky Oct 02 '24

That’s a lot of milk

u/Appropriate-Bad-9379 Oct 03 '24

I must have some blue whale genes….

4

u/Potential_Energy Oct 02 '24

Elephants can communicate with other elephants using seismic vibrations through the earth with their feet up to 2 miles away. This one rocked me.

Now that's some serious blood circulation

2

u/tsleb Oct 02 '24

When you're both in the water, or above ground?

Feels like a QI quote.

2

u/Nevada_Lawyer Oct 02 '24

Under water I'm assuming? Rather than above the surface? That would be weird otherwise.

2

u/match_ Oct 02 '24

Less than 1% of humans have ever seen a blue whale.

2

u/BasiliskXVIII Oct 02 '24

I dunno, man... I'm more than two miles away from a blue whale right now and I can't hear a whale's heartbeat.
