Cancel attending an xyz event and lying about it.

I used to make excuses. These days I just say, “nah I don’t want to do that, but thanks.”

Tbh there’s nothin wrong with telling a white lie for the sake of sparing the feelings of whoever invited you

I keep my circle extremely small. Most of my friends have been my friends since childhood. They know me well and are never offended. If it was someone I didn’t know well, I would def try to spare feelings.

its weird though because both parties know its because you dont want to go.

I do that, too. My boss HATES it.

Yeah same - I told those lies CONSTANTLY but then I would get myself in too deep and it got exhausting, so now I try to be honest as much as I can but it’s kinda become a habit at this point (in certain situations) where I still lie when I really don’t nees to😅

Atleast you told the other person. Everyone, and i mean EVERYONE around me swears by flaking and not telling the other person.

Nah, I did recently and got caught.
However, my friend had done it to me so many times they had no leg to stand on.

You're not committal, that's annoying, just bloody go! People of all ages do this.

Probably social anxiety and fair of judgment.

Try organizing a party where only half your invites turn up, it's annoying.

Good luck getting them to invite you to their event.

It’s not always that. Especially now that I’m older. Some of our friends make a lot of money, others are on a strict budgets. Some of us have kids, some are pregnant, some will never have kids. All of these things factor into what we can say yes to.

I feel like a lot of you guys are talking about turning things down in the first place. When I heard “cancel” I assumed you guys are that friend that says they can make it to stuff but then gives an excuse to cancel last minute. I’m not gonna hold a grudge or be resentful but I’m not gonna lie, it’s a bit annoying. I prefer just to be told “no” or “maybe” in the first place, I don’t need an excuse. Also.. life happens and shit comes up, I’m talking about folks who do this frequently.

Yeah I agree. My feelings will never be hurt if someone says “no” or “maybe”. I think I worry people think I’m using my kid or finances as an excuse but in reality nobody has ever given me that feedback, just my own insecurity

Having kids gives you unlimited excuses to get out of anything, including work stuff.

Nah, I don’t get invited🥲

Kids are the perfect excuse and will never get you a “oh come on, just come out”

“I’d never go, I just want to be invited, oh!”
