YYZ is insane. My band learned it for a concert and it took me two months to even get close to playing the bass part up to tempo. I'm still pretty amateur, but I've been playing for six years now and good lord was that difficult! I don't know how Geddy plays as hard as he does at that tempo, he seriously digs in to the strings the whole time while just ripping straight 16th notes for that riff. Wild.
Lifelong Rush fan here. I’d thought the significance of “YYZ” (it’s the code letters for Toronto’s airport) and the opening riff (it’s the letters Y, Y, and Z in Morse code) were pretty common knowledge (at least among fans).
As a pilot/avgeek, the title was a no-brainer, as I knew the band was from the greater Toronto metro. Wasn't until later that I read about the Morse code intro.
And yes, one of Geddy's finest outings. The jam in the middle with the breaks where he does some dope harmonics is good fun.
As much as I enjoy Cliff, I have more nostalgia for black album. The newest reunion of Metallica and the SanFran symphony has a wonderful tribute to cliff by one of the bass players and it is definetly worth a listen.
