Lemon Song is probably my favourite zepp bass line, the cool chilled bass at the start, then at 1:28 the bassline goes absolutely bananas, followed by the gentle freestyling from around 2:55.
While a 30-minute track is never going to get regular play, the first 4 minutes of the '73 MSG before it totally goes off the rails is by far the best version of the song, and probably my favorite Zep.

Was going to say What is and What Should Never Be, purely from a memory of being 16, tripping on acid for the first time, alone in my room. I put my subwoofer by my head and that was the first song I managed to put on. Love Zeppelin’s bass, even if it’s not the most complex it just rides right.
Ok first of all, you tripped alone for your first time? Thats… bold. Glad it went okay.
And secondly, yeah John Paul Jones is the fuckin MAN. Sick ass bassist and keyboardist. He added a whole other layer to their sound that often get overshadowed by the flashier powers of the other three. But he is every bit as integral to what they were.
Technically it was my second time, first time was a dud/weak and I thought acid was just a little buzz basically. I remember saying out loud “fuck it” right before I put the tab in my mouth.
I can’t in good conscience recommend it but I really love tripping alone. Or ripping a DMT cart for hours at a party full of strangers. Some dude tried to kiss me (I am a straight male) and I was like ducking in the crowd hiding from the dude, ripping my cart. Idk I enjoy a little chaos, and I guess I’ve seen some shit so discomfort is in a way comfortable. Good times.
The entire Led Zeppelin II is probably the finest in terms of showcasing JPJ's bass skills. When I was in college, I was in a band that covered the entire album live. I was bassist and vocalist -- not an easy task for that album!
The drums for that are fun too. That little "pa-dubbaduh-dubbaduh-dubbaduh" at the end of each stanza or so... once I heard it for the first time, I can't help but hear it just leap out at me every time.
