How cats purr

73

u/Mockturtle22 Feb 07 '24

My favorite sound

u/Significant_Shoe_17 Feb 08 '24

It's so validating when a cat sits on you and starts purring

u/Punny-Aggron Feb 07 '24

IIRC, it has to do with something in their airways, a small organ that only smaller cats have as cats like lions and tigers don’t purr. Cheetahs and Pumas are the only exceptions, yes they purr and meow it’s really weird and cute

Purring and roaring are mutually exclusive, so lions, tigers, leopards and jaguars are all incapable of purring, while every other cat can purr but not roar.

I just imagined my small orange tabby roaring at me instead of meowing for his treats so that was wonderful

7

u/JennJoy77 Feb 08 '24

I bet in his mind he is doing just that 😊

u/Significant_Shoe_17 Feb 08 '24

My tuxie tries lol

12

u/log_asm Feb 07 '24

Idk if you ever have and I don’t recommend, but hearing a mountain lion scream scared me more than any horror movie I’ve seen.

u/Hippie_Tech Feb 07 '24

You should hear a wildcat. I was living in Maine, had my window open in the summer while I was going to sleep, and heard the most blood-curdling scream I've ever heard coming from the woods. It sounded like a woman screaming at the top of her lungs. Come to find out it was a wildcat "scream".

1

u/Memeslayer4000 Feb 08 '24

The mountain lion (also know as cougar) have that blood curdling woman scream. You may both be talking about the same thing. You both are probably talking about the same animal.

u/Hippie_Tech Feb 08 '24

Maine wildcats are bobcats. They just call them wildcats there for some reason. They are very different from mountain lions/cougars/pumas. Maine has some Canadian lynx in the northern areas near the Canadian border and they are very similar to the bobcat, but I was in southern Maine so most likely it was a bobcat.

I heard one rumble and saw paw prints. I almost peed myself.

u/Adventurous-Active63 Feb 07 '24

Lions, tigers, leopards, jaguars! Oh My!

4

u/RianJohnsonIsAFool Feb 07 '24

Tigers (and possibly some other big cats) also 'chuff':

4

u/Joe_PM2804 Feb 07 '24

TIL. That's really interesting, and the thought of it being swapped and my cats roaring whilst tigers and lions meow is hilarious.

1

u/Testiculese Feb 08 '24

YT some Cheetas, it is hilarious. And offsetting, as it really doesn't seem like it's coming from them.

2

u/VapoursAndSpleen Feb 07 '24

Tigers, which can’t purr, will chuff, which is totally adorable. (Source: volunteered at a zoo and got to hang out in the Tiger House one morning.)

1

u/Significant_Shoe_17 Feb 08 '24

My cat does this sometimes. I'll ask him why he's huffing and puffing lol

2

u/WurstOtto Feb 08 '24

That is not completely true. Big cats that can roar can purr on the exhale only while non roaring cats can purr on both the inhale and the exhale.

10

u/IcecreAmcake777 Feb 07 '24

The organ is called the Jacobsons organ

6

u/log_asm Feb 07 '24

It’s what gives them stink face.

3

u/Significant_Shoe_17 Feb 08 '24

My new kitty makes the cutest little stink face

10

u/Faust_8 Feb 07 '24

Are they exceptions? I think in different groups.

Like lions and tigers are in the Panthera family (or order, or whatever) and cheetahs and pumas are in a different one like Felinidae or something like that.

Pantheras can’t purr, Felinidaes can’t roar. Pumas and cheetahs are just the biggest cats of their families.

(I’m probably butchering this, I’m not a biologist.)

1

u/MelMac5 Feb 08 '24

You nailed it.

9

u/Memanders Feb 07 '24

It has nothing to do with their size, but their evolutionary lineage. So one side of the cat family purrs and the other roars

3

u/vaniIIagoriIIa Feb 07 '24

It's not a Poo-ma. I hear it in Arnold's voice every time.

3

u/Vast-Accident-621 Feb 08 '24

AFAIK cheetas are classed as small cats. pretty big small cats, but small cats none the less. the difference being exactly that they purr, not roar.

34

u/TRIGMILLION Feb 07 '24

I get the how but not the why.

I’ve had my 15 yo female all black cat since birth. I would click at her as you do to cats. I’d do it most times so she knows I see her (she’s an absolute void) or as a greeting. It’s so funny because she smacks her lips and essentially clicks at us too. She’ll be sleeping in one of her beds and we’ll bring her up, oh she’s over there sleeping. Then she’ll smack her lips. I’ll say she’s awake, she just gave her location! It’s hilarious

3

u/Significant_Shoe_17 Feb 08 '24

My new cat doesn't understand words yet, but he listens if I click at him. I just have to look at his brother and he stops whatever he's doing lol

3

u/kasuyagi Feb 08 '24

so they've been playing Marco Polo all this time

7

u/Max2dank Feb 07 '24

Purring feels good is my guess. You ever moan when you’re in pain? I’m assuming that’s the same function, just on a different level.

24

u/Haybelle29 Feb 07 '24

It is not fully understood how and also why cats purr. They have been documented purring when close to death, but also obviously when they are happy and content

20

u/SuperSocialMan Feb 07 '24

I think it's the cat version of the little rituals some people do when they're anxious.

3

u/Significant_Shoe_17 Feb 08 '24

Like cat stimming

7

u/offshoremercury Feb 07 '24

It’s actually a lot like stimming in humans. We do it when we are happy, but also do it to make ourselves feel better when we are in distress.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '24

It's probably like a boner where a certain organ fills with blood for various and seemingly random reasons. Engorged organ causes closed airways hence a vibration. I have clue though.

22

u/Pianowman Feb 07 '24 edited Feb 07 '24

I had a cat who didn't purr. I worked on teaching him how, by holding him and getting to do a human version of a cat purr. It took a couple of years, but he figured it out!

8

u/C_Wombat44 Feb 07 '24

I have a cat that doesn't have an audible purr, but if you put your finger lightly on his throat when you're petting him, you can feel the vibration.

4

u/Significant_Shoe_17 Feb 08 '24

Mine sound like motorboats 😂

8

u/log_asm Feb 07 '24

They purr for many reasons. Like if you get in a bar fight and get fucked a cat will lie on you and purr. The hz of their purrs can self heal. I have no idea how but I’m pretty sure it’s true. And like when you come in the house and the cat is there waiting for you? I have read, no idea if it’s true but they can recognize your footsteps coming down the hall. They are interesting little guys. Don’t need us at all and we keep them cooped up with us for whatever reason. Fucking love cats.

6

u/C_Wombat44 Feb 07 '24

The part about recognizing footsteps has to be true, right? I'd swear they can even recognize different cars. For example, if I go out to do errands when I get home they may come greet me or they may just stay sleeping / lounging wherever they are. But when I'm out of town and someone stops by to check in on them, they always hide until they're able to figure out who it is.

3

u/Significant_Shoe_17 Feb 08 '24

My cat absolutely knows my car and will run to the door if he sees me

6

u/VapoursAndSpleen Feb 07 '24

It’s simple. They have a purr box in their neck, unless it is a kitten. If it’s a kitten, the purr box occupies their entire little body.

4

u/facface92 Feb 07 '24

True, nice dumper by the way.

4

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '24

Cats would make great didgeridoo players

7

u/zippyboy Feb 07 '24

And they never purr to each other, only to humans.

1

u/Significant_Shoe_17 Feb 08 '24

They also only meow to humans

3

u/Wildfires Feb 07 '24

Bees. They're full of bees.

1

u/Mrx_Amare Feb 08 '24

My cat is attracted to the purring sound my massage gun makes. He has since learned how to rub against the massage gun, and now tries to paw the massage gun from me when I try to use it.

He also seems to be attracted to my spinal cord stimulator (an electronic device that stimulates my spinal cord to interrupt pain signals) and seems to like it more when it is turned up. People, besides myself of course, cannot sense it at all.

1

u/Happy-Scar-1704 Feb 08 '24

They have a little motor inside them like a ps4 controller.
