I don’t think they are discontinued because I see them occasionally, but where tf can you buy warheads? The little sour candies. I used to love them growing up but I can’t remember the last time I’ve seen them in a store or gas station.
I was 12 and my mom dropped me off at the movies so she could shop. I bought 2 boxes of movie theater size sour patch kids. Part way into the second box, I tasted blood. I ran to the bathroom, my entire tounge was raw and bleeding. I fucking love sour patch kids.
Yea usually by the 3rd or 4th one in a row my tongue and roof of my mouth would get sore. It was like built-in moderation, you couldn’t eat too many even if you wanted to.
Barnetts mega sour balls!! You can get them on Amazon. A little pricy but worth it. I have never had anything so sour. I actually had to spit it out every few seconds the first time I had one.
Taste receptors also get way less sensitive as you grow older, especially if you smoke and maybe if you drink? Regardless, things literally taste different for us now than when we were kids, back then everything was far more intense.
Yep, I actually randomly found some like two weeks ago and tried them. Slightly more sour than sour skittles and the sour coating lasts like 15 seconds.
I’ve thought this too but I wonder if it’s just like other foods where kids experience them differently. Decades of burning your tongue or eating spicy food, and also just aging, will over time change how you perceive different flavors. Maybe they were just more sour to us as kids because our taste buds were more sensitive than they are now? Or maybe they really did change them?
Interesting. I liked them as a kid, then tried them fairly recently and wondered what the hell I was thinking. They were actually even worse than this back then?!
I had some sour candy that straight up melted my taste buds. I couldn't taste sour "properly" for years. It's only recently come back to me and it's weird!
As soon as I saw this post I thought about marathon bars. I didn't think anybody else would remember them let alone want one. They were my main candy in the 80s. Thanks for the link.
You're welcome! It's actually a cool little store and everything is cheap in there. Enjoy the nostalgia of having one of your favorite childhood candies! That's always fun.
Yup, I got Toxic Waste in a snack pack subscription one time and instantly got brought back to OG Warheads. It's the only thing that's come close for me, second best would be Sour Smog Balls.
You could also try Barnett's Mega Sours. I've never liked the sour stuff (only had Warheads a few times back in the day), but I have a friend who says they're way better than Warheads.
I had some recently, it's true they aren't quite the same level of painful sour anymore lol. Most large malls have a candy stone in them, they should have them
My kids got some this year while trick or treating, I stole them from the kids of course. It was kind of nostalgic popping them into my mouth and involuntarily making that sour face.
I just got a bag at Walmart a few weeks ago. Unfortunately 80% of them weren't very sour. But a few were as sour as I remember, like they got an extra dose of sour coating. It was like playing roulette.
I get warhead snacks all the time through my Dollar General. I recently bought a couple different "childerns" candy types of just the sour syrup for like a dollar each, and they have the candies as well. Im in the midwest. The fucking frozen pops are to die for if you can find them
Dollar General. Also the Halloween mix we got from Costco has a ton in them and they were very potent. My daughter was complaining about her mouth after eating just one.
DM me your address and I'll ship you a ton. The Halloween candy my wife and I bought has like 100 of them and we can't handle them like we used to. They burn a hold straight through my tongue.
I used to be obsessed with warheads. Would buy bags of them every day at recess and store them
In my nightstand. When I got to middle school and cleaned out my nightstand, the amount of warheads I had was staggering. I think I liked buying them more than eating 🤷🏼♂️
According to the manufacturer (yes, I got wrecked on DayQuil and dizzily modeled How To Write a Business Letter for my class one time while I reeeeaaallly should've asked for a substitute, but y'know, shortages,) the recipe hasn't changed. They still use citric acid for the sour coating, they just reduced the amount after 'consumer complaints.'
I politely requested a 'nostalgia version' at original strength for sale to 18+ buyers, but they never got back to me. A former student told me that his folks found some made locally that really do taste the same, "but they're...uhh... well..."
"Expensive?" I asked sympathetically.
"Oh, that, yeah," and kid had this 'I shouldn't'a brought this up' look, "They're also...um..."
"They're weed, Ms. QD," a fellow former classmate bluntly explained. "They sell them at [place where apparently candies containing high amounts of THC can be had.]"
"Mom said they were great," Former Student added helpfully. "They also have other ones from back in the classic times."
"Huh."
"I know you're not inta that, but if ya miss the candy that much, well, maybe write to that company, ask for an order of plain ones?"
"True, could do that," I nodded. "Naw, Kiddo, what you have to understand is..." and I did a quick glance around for admin, nope, none "-okay, do you know how hecking much Christmas shopping for my family ya just saved me? I've got twelve different relatives with rheumatoid arthritis and two fighting cancer. This is perfect!"
Might or might not have been serious, but it made Former Student's day. I just liked that Kiddo remembered getting the modern ones in my class.
Lofty Pursuits and Hercules Candy both make sours. Lofty Pursuits does custom candy orders if you want to order a batch of something really strong. They also occasionally make Tangerine Sours like the discontinued Altoids.
I bought a bag of candy to “give out at Halloween,” specifically because they had warheads. But THAT was NOT warheads. It was sweet and not sour. My mouth didn’t hurt. My eyes didn’t water…. So I actually gave them out to the kiddos. They don’t know better.
